Healy declares herself fit but not locked in, Dunkley to play but Cross unavailable

Both Australia and England are still finalising their bowling attacks with the MCG pitch having a tinge of green on it

Sthalekar: Will break Healy’s heart not to play the Ashes Test

Australia captain Alyssa Healy has declared herself “good to go” for Thursday’s historic women’s Ashes Test at the MCG but conceded the final decision on whether she plays will not be up to her with the team to be announced at the toss.Meanwhile, England captain Heather Knight confirmed Sophia Dunkley will come back into the Test side after missing the last game in South Africa as a seventh batter but Kate Cross has been ruled out despite training yesterday, with a decision to be made by England whether to play two spinners or three specialist seamers in the attack.Healy attending the captain’s press conference in her full whites and her baggy green the day before the Test on Wednesday appeared a clear indication that her recovery from a foot injury has gone well, and that she was preparing to play the game after getting through a solid training session on Tuesday. She also posed for photos with Knight and went and looked at the pitch prior to training. But despite declaring herself ready to play, she could not confirm whether she was locked into the XI as the selectors are set to make the final decision on Wednesday evening.”I’m good to go,” Healy said with a smile. “The final XI hasn’t quite been decided upon just yet, but I’m standing here in front of you without a moon boot, saying I’m ready to go.”Alyssa Healy has a look at the Test pitch at the MCG•Getty Images

Healy confirmed that the decision would be a joint one between the selectors and the medical staff as to her availability.Related

“I think a bit of both,” Healy said. “I think the medical staff have been really supportive of not necessarily what I’ve wanted to do, but just the opportunity to potentially even push to play in this Test match in particular. They’ve been awesome. We’ve done everything we possibly can to get myself in a position to put my hand up and say, I’m ready to go. There’s a little bit taken out of my hands in that regard and obviously we still want to do the best by the team. But I’m excited and I feel like, body wise, I’m ready to get out there and lead the side in a Test match which is cool.”Healy said she had pulled up well after running, fielding and batting at training on Tuesday and also confirmed she would not need much pain management throughout the game. She also said there were very few fears of her doing any more damage to the stress injury in her foot.”It’s been surprising to me every single day that I’ve done some stuff, just how well it’s responded,” Healy said. “I was pushed pretty hard yesterday. I think you all saw me. I was blowing a fair bit.”Obviously we’ve done that on purpose to try and see what I can and can’t get through and I’ve pulled up really well. So I’m really positive moving forward.Alyssa Healy and Heather Knight pose ahead of the day-night Ashes Test at the MCG•Getty Images

“There’s a bit of unknown as to how the four days will pan out. But I think at the moment I’m on as little medication as possible, which I think is a huge sign. The fact that I can get through what I can without any, always means you can add more, right? But we’ve sought a lot of advice, a lot of specialist advice as to what it might look like moving forward, and there’s no real evidence to suggest that it might go any further than what it currently is. So that’s positive signs for me, and probably gave me the mental nod as well to go, yep, I think I can push to try and play. So I’m confident getting through four days, and hopefully it can do just that.”Healy not being able to keep does change the composition of the top order. Beth Mooney will take the gloves but will not open as a result. Mooney has opened in five of her seven Test matches, including the last three Australia have played. Australia’s top seven has been unchanged in those three matches with Mooney opening alongside Phoebe Litchfield while Healy has batted at No. 5. Healy said she was happy to bat anywhere but no decision has been made. Georgia Voll is the only other option to make her Test debut if Healy is ruled out by the selectors.”Moons coming down the order is a bit of a shift, and we’re going to have to make a decision at the top,” Healy said. “I’m more than happy to bat anywhere for Australia. I think everybody knows that. So whether it’s me, great, if it’s not me, then obviously there’s a pretty obvious candidate.”Healy took a look at the MCG surface which had a typical covering of green grass on it. Whether it will play the same as it does for the men in Tests and Sheffield Shield cricket remains to be seen. Australia are wrestling with the fact that it is typically a seamer friendly track but their spinners have been the dominant force in this Ashes so far, and in the previous Ashes Test win in 2023.Sophia Dunkley will be adding batting depth to England•ECB via Getty Images

England are facing a similar debate having played six batters, three quicks and two spinners in their last Test win in South Africa. Knight confirmed that Dunkley will come in which means a bowler will miss out.”We’ve got 12 at the moment, we’re just deciding on the final bowler,” Knight said. “Obviously, in the last Test match we went for an extra bowler because of the proximity to the Ashes. But in this Test match, we’re going to play the extra batter, so Sophia Dunkley will come in from that Test match. And then we’re just deciding between a seamer or a spinner for that final spot. We’ll have another look at the wicket tonight.”There’s no room for Cross however. Despite getting through two spells at training yesterday, she is not quite fit enough to play in the Test match.”Kate Cross is unfortunately not going to be playing,” Knight said. “She’s been amazing. She’s worked so diligently to try and get over her [back] injury. Worked really hard, but she hasn’t quite been able to get back to her pace and her performance level. Really gutted for her, because she’s a key member for us, and it’s been really great to have her back around the group actually the last couple of days, she’s a huge member of the team and a leader in this group.”

£80m Chelsea player could now leave in 24 hours after Chukwuemeka

Chelsea have raised £239 million in player sales after Carney Chukwuemeka’s £24m move to Borussia Dortmund, but another could soon be following him.

Thanks to their plethora of exit deals, Enzo Maresca’s side possess an excellent summer net spend of just £3 million heading into deadline day, so they’re under no pressure from the Premier League’s PSR rules to balance their books.

However, due to their pact with UEFA, Chelsea still need to sell certain members of the squad.

They reached a settlement with the governing body last month after Chelsea breached FFP laws, and a condition of this pact is that they must produce a positive transfer balance by the end of the window.

Failure to do so will result in them being unable to register new signings for Maresca’s Champions League squad, and only players who were involved in their Conference League squad last season will count towards viable outgoings.

This is why the sales of Christopher Nkunku and Nicolas Jackson are viewed as crucial to Chelsea’s remaining transfer plans for the window.

BlueCo have been in talks over signing Man United winger Alejandro Garnacho and RB Leipzig playmaker Xavi Simons for weeks, and reports now claim that Chelsea are also eyeing Barcelona star Fermin Lopez as an alternative to the latter.

A sell-to-buy policy appears very much in effect at Stamford Bridge, but a potentially imminent exit for Jackson could be on the cards to allow Maresca’s side to make room.

Bayern Munich are in negotiations over the Senegal international, valued at £80 million, who has also attracted rumoured interest from Aston Villa and Newcastle United.

Now, the player’s own agent has shared an intriguing update on his future.

Nicolas Jackson tipped to leave Chelsea within 24 hours

Speaking to Wiw Sports on Tuesday morning, Jackson’s representative, Diomansy Kramara, claimed that the striker is expected to leave Chelsea in the next 48 hours, so at the time of writing now, this is now 24 hours.

The former Villarreal star was a key member of Maresca’s first team last season, bagging 13 goals and six assists in all competitions, including a strike in the Conference League final.

However, the additions of Liam Delap and Joao Pedro have pushed Jackson down the pecking order, and he’s not been involved in any of Chelsea’s opening Premier League games as Maresca confirms he can leave.

Tottenham favourites to sign £44m ex-Chelsea captain who can play as a 10

Tottenham are in glaring need of a new number 10 and an alternative to James Maddison after the Englishman’s fresh injury nightmare, and Thomas Frank will be ruing their missed opportunities to bring one in this summer.

Spurs’ emotional Seoul farewell to club legend Son Heung‑min soured last Sunday when Maddison was forced off on a stretcher late into their 1-1 pre-season draw with Newcastle.

The former Leicester City star – having just recovered from a knee injury which sidelined him at the end of 2024/2025 – came on in the 75th minute and lasted barely ten minutes before collapsing in agony, clutching that same knee. Frank didn’t sugarcoat it.

The Dane confirmed it was “bad” and the same knee that sidelined Maddison in May, ruling him out of Europa League final glory, with the 28-year-old now expected to face yet another lengthy lay-off in a major headache for Frank.

Maddison was poised to be the creative heartbeat of Frank’s new-look Spurs side this season – especially with Son waving goodbye to the club after 10 years and fellow chief creator, Dejan Kulusevski, also out injured.

Daniel Levy has already splashed £117 million on the signings of Mohammed Kudus, Mathys Tel, Kota Takai, Kevin Danso and a loan deal for Joao Palhinha, but losing Maddison leaves the attack dangerously thin.

FFC Spurs – James Maddison

Tottenham were on the verge of signing Morgan Gibbs-White this time last month, which would’ve solved this problem.

They even scheduled a medical for the 25-year-old ahead of a £60 million move (BBC), but Nottingham Forest blocked the transfer, wrote a letter to Spurs threatening legal action and, to rub salt in the wound, tied Gibbs-White down with a club-record new deal.

Spurs are still in hot pursuit of a new playmaker, listing it as one of their chief priorities before deadline day on September 1 (Alasdair Gold), and there are a few Gibbs-White alternatives to keep aware of.

Despite RB Leipzig’s approach for Liverpool star Harvey Elliott, talkSPORT’s Alex Crook suggests that the England Under-21 sensation could emerge as a target for Spurs, while Crystal Palace’s Eberechi Eze has also been linked with a move to N17.

Tottenham favourites to sign Conor Gallagher from Atlético Madrid

Another outside-the-box option could be former Chelsea captain Conor Gallagher.

While more traditionally used as a defensive anchor, the Englishman can play further forward in a traditional centre-midfield role and, more importantly, as a CAM.

According to Football Espana, Tottenham are seen as the most likely destination for Gallagher this summer, following reports that Atlético Madrid will let him go for a fee of up to £44 million.

FE report that Levy is considering a bid for the 25-year-old, so this could be one to watch as Spurs ponder offering Gallagher a route back to London after just over 12 months in the Spanish capital.

“Conor Gallagher is a hardworking player, with quality, a good presence, recovers balls, and always gives his maximum in every situation,” said Atlético boss Diego Simeone.

“He came with a lot of enthusiasm, and we need that kind of player in the midfield because he makes us better.”

During his final season at Stamford Bridge, Gallagher averaged their second-highest average of key passes per 90 in the top flight behind Cole Palmer (WhoScored) – bagging nine assists in all competitions to boot.

Mauricio Pochettino used him in an attacking midfield role regularly during that time too, and Gallagher would also help to fill Spurs’ ‘locally trained’ Champions League quota.

Tottenham make approach to sign "superb" Barcelona midfielder in £26m deal

As the Premier League campaign draws near and they continue their summer business, reports are now claiming that Tottenham Hotspur have launched an approach to sign a Barcelona midfielder.

Palhinha reveals delight at Premier League return

After missing out on Morgan Gibbs-White, who opted to sign a new contract at Nottingham Forest instead of joining up with Thomas Frank’s side, a new midfielder always seemed on the Tottenham agenda. And whilst Joao Palhinha is a different type of player to Gibbs-White, he will offer the Lilywhites the reinforcement that they’ve been craving.

Delighted to be back in the Premier League following a tough year at Bayern Munich, Palhinha – on paper – is the perfect midfielder for Frank’s hard-working, combative midfield.

It wouldn’t even be absurd to suggest that the ex-Fulham man could be the Dane’s new version of Christian Norgaard, who thrived under his management at Brentford before leaving for Arsenal this summer.

Bayern Munich's Joao Palhinha in action against Bayer Leverksen.

That said, Palhinha isn’t the only midfield name to find himself on Tottenham’s radar following their Gibbs-White disappointment earlier in the summer transfer window.

Tottenham make first Casado approach

As reported by Sport in Spain, and relayed by Sport Witness, Tottenham made an approach to sign Marc Casado from Barcelona before they secured Palhinha’s signature.

The 21-year-old is free to leave the La Liga giants for around €30m (£26m) this summer and, although he reportedly turned down the chance to complete a move the first time around, it will be interesting to see whether Spurs come calling with a second attempt to secure his arrival this month.

Praised for his “superb attitude” by U23 scout Antonio Mango, Barcelona’s loss could quickly become Tottenham’s gain if they managed to convince Casado into a move this summer. Whilst Palhinha’s arrival does ease their desperation for another midfielder, the chance to sign a La Masia graduate is not one that the Lilywhites should turn down.

Barcelona's Marc Casado against Benfica.

At just 21 years old, the Spaniard would be the long-term option that Palhinha – at 30 years old – can’t guarantee Frank’s side, especially given that they have no obligation to buy the latter after his loan spell next summer.

'He wants to be there' – Enzo Maresca delivers latest injury update on Cole Palmer and addresses growing Chelsea fans' concerns over surgery

Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca has spoken to the media about Cole Palmer's condition at a press conference on Monday morning. It comes after the Blues star lasted just 21 minutes in the weekend defeat to Manchester United, which was his first start since a groin injury hampered his start to the 2025-26 season.

'We need to assess a little bit'

After being forced off the pitch at Old Trafford less than midway through the first half, Maresca has confirmed that Palmer remains a doubt for upcoming Chelsea fixtures and still requires further medical assessment. But the Blues coach also admitted that his star man wasn't 100 per cent for the Manchester United game, which he started, calling it now a "day by day" situation.

AdvertisementPalmer surgery not currently a concern

"Cole probably is the only one that we need to assess a little bit," Maresca explained as he gave team news to assembled reporters before Tuesday night's Carabao Cup tie against Lincoln City. "He already did a huge effort last Saturday [against Man Utd]. He was not 100 per cent. He wants to be there to help the team. It's day by day to see how he is. The rest [of the squad] are okay.

"The medical staff didn't mention to me about surgery. I don't know about the next weeks, but I don't think so to be honest."

Getty Images SportChelsea's lack of 'number 10' depth

For all of the attacking talent in Chelsea's squad, the Blues appear to lack a natural replacement for Palmer in the central attacking midfield role. In his absence for wins over West Ham and Fulham, Joao Pedro got the nod to start, but Liam Delap's subsequent injury has pushed the Brazilian higher up the pitch. Facundo Buonanotte then started the Brentford draw, while it was Andrey Santos who came on for Palmer at Old Trafford.

AFPChelsea's tough fixture list to navigate

Chelsea are in action four times before club football pauses for the October international break early next month. But after being heavy favourites against Lincoln in the Carabao Cup and then hosting a struggling Brighton in the Premier League, the Blues welcome Jose Mourinho back to Stamford Bridge in his new role with Benfica, before Liverpool also then visit. Depending on how Palmer recovers and how his fitness is managed, he could return to play some part in those games, or equally miss all of them.

Elanga will love him: £50m Wissa alternative is now a top Newcastle target

Newcastle United remain without Alexander Isak, with the Sweden international still refusing to play for the club this season. It meant Eddie Howe had to get creative in their Premier League opener, with Anthony Gordon leading the line and Harvey Barnes and Anthony Elanga operating out wide.

For Isak’s Sweden teammate Elanga, it was an impressive debut. According to the stats on Sofascore, he made 23 sprints and showed his electric pace, clocking in at 35.3km/h as his quickest speed. He also created two chances and was a bright spark going forward for Newcastle.

However, their attack feels unbalanced with Gordon up front. They are still targeting a striker this summer, with Isak’s future still very much hanging in the balance.

Newcastle’s striker target

There have certainly been plenty of names bandied about when it comes to Newcastle’s search for a striker. One of the latest targets is Wolves’ Jorgen Strand Larsen, with fellow Premier League centre-forwards Yoane Wissa of Brentford and Nicolas Jackson of Chelsea also viable options.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

However, another name from within the Premier League has once again cropped up. According to a report from TBR Football, the Magpies are said to have made Aston Villa and England star Ollie Watkins a ‘prime target’ ahead of the final ten days of the window.

The former Brentford attacker could leave Villa Park if they themselves can sign Jackson from Chelsea. Given Waktins is ‘one of the names high on their list’, Newcastle could pounce.

As for the price, it was reported earlier in the window that the Villans would demand as much as £50m for the 29-year-old.

Why Watkins would be a good signing

There is no doubt that, if Watkins makes the move to Tyneside this summer, his potential new club would be signing a ready-made Premier League striker. He has garnered a reputation as one of the Premier League’s biggest threats in front of goal.

Watkins has become an incredibly potent Premier League striker. Sky Sports’ Dougie Critchley described the England star as a “dangerous” number nine, and it is easy to see why. He has 75 goals in 185 games in the English top flight, assisting a further 36.

Consistency has been key for the Exeter-born attacker. In the five full seasons of Premier League football he has played, Watkins has reached double figures for goals in all of them. The 2023/24 season was his best, a campaign in which he scored 16 top-flight goals.

Well, Watkins might be a player that Elanga loves playing with. Newcastle’s new recruit, who signed from Nottingham Forest, had an impressive season in Garibaldi Red in 2024/25, scoring six goals and assisting 11 in 38 Premier League appearances.

Newcastle’s number 20 had a big role to play in their 0-0 draw against Watkins’ Villa last weekend.

His line-breaking pass on the counterattack to Gordon led Villans defender Ezri Konsa to haul down the makeshift striker, with the result a red card for the centre-back.

The winger loves to play with space ahead of him, as he said in an interview last season. He explained after a stunning solo effort against Manchester United that “attacking the space” is a key part of his game.

The fact that he can exploit that so well must be music to Watkins’ ears. The England striker has previously said himself that “running in behind and causing the defence trouble” is his “bread and butter”, as this goal against Everton last season showed.

It is easy to see why Elanga and Watkins could work so well together. Elanga is a player who loves to carry the ball and find runners in behind, and with Watkins’ ability to stretch play, this could play into his hands perfectly.

For a fee of £50m, pairing up a deadly Premier League striker and a proven assist-maker could be the perfect move for Howe.

Yuzvendra Chahal returns to Northamptonshire for 2025 season

Chahal will be available from June until the end of the season after an impressive stint at Wantage Road in 2024

ESPNcricinfo staff13-Mar-2025Yuzvendra Chahal will return to Northamptonshire this summer on a contract running from June until the end of the 2025 season. The Indian leg spinner will be available for the county’s County Championship and One-Day Cup campaigns. The deal is reminiscent to the one that brought the 34-year old to Wantage Road last summer.Chahal ended up taking 5 for 14 on his List A debut for the club, against Kent, who he joined in 2023, before helping Northamptonshire to a fourth-place finish in Division Two with 19 Championship wickets in four matches, at an average of 21.10. He also managed two five-wicket hauls, with 5 for 45 against Derbyshire making up career-best first-class match figures of 9 for 99.Though Chahal has not featured for India since 2023 – he was an unused member of the successful 2024 T20 World Cup squad – he remains a sought-after wrist spinner. In November, he became the most expensive spin bowler at IPL auctions when he was signed for INR 18 crore (£1.6 million) by Punjab Kings ahead of the 2025 season, which finishes on May 25.”I thoroughly enjoyed my time here last season so I’m very happy to be coming back.” Chahal said.”There are some great people in that dressing room, and I can’t wait to be part of that again.”We played some great cricket towards the back end of the season so hopefully we’re able to replicate that and big up some victories.”Northamptonshire’s recently-appointed head coach Darren Lehmann lauded the the re-signing of Chahal: “I’m really excited that one of best leg spinners in the world is returning to Northamptonshire this season.””He brings invaluable experience and he’s an absolute gentleman who loves the game. Having him available from mid-June until the end of the season will be fantastic for us.”
