Liverpool could beat Chelsea to £80m signing who’s Coutinho 2.0

There was never any doubting Jurgen Klopp, surely? Last term Liverpool looked a shadow of the team that had run Manchester City so close to the title, and indeed won the Premier League during that bizarre campaign during the pandemic.

The club had lost its aura and that was largely due to a paperweight midfield that was without a cut and thrust capable of competing with the barnstorming central areas that City and Arsenal possess.

They lacked a Rodri, a Thomas Partey, players who crash around while still bringing an element of class to the way they use the football.

However, in 2023/24, that problem has been fixed. A holding midfielder is perhaps still required but in Dominik Szoboszlai, Ryan Gravenberch and Alexis Mac Allister, a brighter picture has been painted.

So, the thought of adding to that young triumvirate of players is exciting. Enter the January transfer window…

Liverpool's January plans

Chief among the club's plans for the upcoming transfer window will be keeping Mohamed Salah who was the subject of a mega bid from Saudi in the summer.

The thought of their great Egyptian leaving in the next few years is becoming more of a reality the longer time goes on and finding an heir apparent is wise.

It perhaps explains recent links to Bayer Leverkusen sensation Florian Wirtz. The German has attracted the interest of Chelsea of late according to reports but Liverpool are in the conversation too.

Indeed, as per claims in Spain, the Reds are even preparing a €92m (£80m) bid to lure the 20-year-old away from the Bundesliga.

Wirtz's stats this season

Widely renowned as one of the most promising young footballers on the continent, Wirtz has recovered exceptionally well from a horrendous ACL injury that kept him out of action for the best part of nine months in the latter stages of 2022.

Despite that, he was still able to feature 25 times across all competitions for Leverkusen last term, posting four goals and eight assists.

In 2023/24, however, he has gone to another level. Under the wing of former Liverpool hero Xabi Alonso, Wirtz already has six goals and ten assists in 17 outings.

It's been a remarkable start to the season for a young talent who sadly for Alonso seems destined for greater pastures.

Wirtz's style of play

Wirtz is a phenomenally versatile player having played on the wing fleetingly in his young career, as well as a second striker and as a classic number 10. It's in that attacking midfield position, however, where he's been electric this season.

A right-footed talent, the player's heat map (as per Sofascore) dictates that he likes to drift inside onto his favoured foot, often operating in the left-hand channel.

Though, as a remarkable goal in October (shown below) dictates, he can also operate equally as well on the opposing side, gliding past players in jaw-dropping fashion.

This is seemingly a player who has it all. Anton Ferdinand, whether you take his opinion seriously or not, is one man who has been left in awe of the Germany international who he claimed should be spoken about "in the same way as Bellingham", a man Liverpool were so religiously linked with before his move to Real Madrid.

Klopp may have Szoboszlai in his ranks now, a man compared to the marvellous Philippe Coutinho but truth be told, Wirtz is the true heir.

Like the Brazilian who left Anfield for Barcelona, he likes those left-hand channels, cutting inside and unleashing a deadly dose of creativity.

At his peak, Coutinho was a freak of nature in the opposition's third of the pitch. During 2017/18, he sat inside the top 2% of positionally similar players in the Premier League for progressive passes per 90 (11.77) and progressive carries (5.60).

Wirtz isn't quite the same level of ball carrier, managing 4.23 per 90 this season in the Bundesliga, but his creativity is immense. Ranking inside the top 2% of positionally similar players in the German top-flight, he has registered 7.59 progressive passes. It's not quite the dizzy heights of Coutinho just yet but at the age of just 20, these numbers will certainly get even better.

Such a generational talent would, therefore, be a wonderful addition to the Anfield ranks. It's just a pity they'll have to break the bank to seal their next Coutinho.

“Superb" Rangers talent wanted by several overseas clubs ahead of January

Glasgow Rangers could be set to lose one of their up-and-coming prospects next year, with a fresh report revealing that he’s being targeted ahead of January.

Recent departures at Rangers

Over the summer, those at Ibrox side sanctioned the sales of 11 players in total, with eight of those leaving on a permanent basis, while the remaining three were sent out on loan for the rest of the season to increase their game time and experience.

Glen Kamara (Leeds)

Ben Williamson (Partick Thistle)

Ryan Kent (Fenerbahce)

Filip Helander (Odense BK)

Scott Arfield (Charlotte)

Mateusz Zukowski (Slask Wroclaw)

Lewis Mayo (Kilmarnock FC)

The Light Blues have John Lundstram, Borna Barisic, Ryan Jack, Kemar Roofe, Jon McLaughlin and Leon Balogun who will have reached the expiration of their deals at the end of the term so they could also soon be heading for the exit door (Rangers contracts).

The Ibrox outfit, now managed by Philippe Clement, additionally have a decision to make over the future of right-winger Ross McCausland who is another squad member who will be out of contract upon the conclusion of the current campaign, though chiefs appear keen to retain his services for the foreseeable.

The Northern Ireland youth international is reportedly set to be tabled fresh terms in order to fend off any potential interest during the upcoming transfer window, but if the following update is to be believed, the 20-year-old has already been brought onto the radar of two clubs in the Serie A so could leave the Scottish Premiership.

Atalanta and AS Roma want Ross McCausland

According to outlet TuttoMercatoWeb (via Sport Witness), McCausland is of interest to Atalanta and AS Roma ahead of January. The Italian pair are among “numerous clubs” who are keeping a close eye on his performances, but the mentioned duo are in particular “monitoring him through their scouts”.

Whilst talks are yet to take place, the forward’s contract situation means that he “could represent an opportunity” in the new year, where he may cost as little as €450k (£392k) should a pre-contract agreement be reached.

Glasgow Rangers forwardRoss McCausland.

Rangers need to keep "superb talent" in McCausland

Despite McCausland having only made nine senior appearances for Rangers, Clement will know that he may have an exciting prospect with bags of potential to offer, so it’s important that the club tie him down because he will be a key player for the future in Glasgow.

The County Antrim-born talent has clocked up 20 involvements, 14 goals and six assists, in 59 appearances since the start of his career (Transfermarkt – McCausland stats), displaying how prolific he can be at creating and putting chances away in the final third.

The Teddy Bears starlet is also a versatile operator having been deployed in four different positions over the grass since first bursting onto the professional scene, including out wide on both the left and right flanks, alongside two roles in the midfield, so he’s a wonderful option to have in the building should any unexpected injuries occur.

According to journalist Josh Bunting, McCausland is a “superb talent” and even the thought of losing him could be a real blow, so there’s no doubt that everyone associated with the club may well be hoping that he puts pen to paper on an improved contract instead of making the decision to move onto new pastures in January.

Spurs could sign a Saliba clone with move for £39m titan

It's probably fair to say that many thought Champions League contention would be out of reach for Tottenham Hotspur this season, having lumbered to an eighth-placed Premier League finish last term and waved a forlorn goodbye to Harry Kane in August.

But Ange Postecoglou said no, and stemmed the grungy flow that has seeped into the confidence of the staunch Spurs support, instilling life and a verve that had wandered astray; ten matches in, Tottenham top the table.

But disaster struck and Postecoglou's side faltered with a raft of absences exposing the frailty and thinness of the Lilywhites' squad, who have now suffered three league losses on the trot.

Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou.

The forthcoming winter period threatens bleakness – especially with clashes against Manchester City and Newcastle United around the corner – and while Spurs have enough quality to stay in the race for top four, it's imperative that the January transfer window is used to fortify the fold.

Tottenham transfer news – Jean-Clair Todibo

According to a recent report from the Evening Standard, Tottenham have registered an interest in OGC Nice star Jean-Clair Todibo, with the Frenchman excelling in Ligue 1.

It's understood that Spurs are desperate for defensive reinforcements after losing both Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero against Chelsea highlighting the lack of depth.

Nice defenderJean-Clair Todibo.

However, with Liverpool and Manchester United also eyeing a move for the 23-year-old, who has been valued at around £39m by his side, Spurs chairman Daniel Levy will have his work cut out to present an enticing package.

Todibo's style of play

Todibo is a tall and imposing defender with a modern style that allows him to blend physicality and power with style and progression, always seeking to influence play from an attacking standpoint.

Only last month, Todibo set the record for the most touches in a Ligue 1 match since the records began in 2006/07, and given that Postecoglou is building a free-flowing, pass-proficient team in Tottenham, a transfer could work wonders for all involved parties.

It could also spell danger for Eric Dier, whose career down the N17 already hangs by a thread, having only started one game across all competitions this season and currently playing his final season, out of contract in June.

The 29-year-old Englishman ranks among the bottom 9% of positional peers across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for progressive passes for 90, which evidences his incongruity within the new system.

As per FBref, Todibo ranks among the top 8% of central defenders for passes attempted, the top 18% for progressive passes, the top 7% for successful take-ons and the top 5% for tackles per 90.

Proclaimed to be "solid as a rock" by talent scout Jacek Kulig, Todibo has been a centrepiece within Ligue 1's strongest defence this term, with second-placed Les Aiglons having shipped just four goals from the opening 13 matches.

Todibo has indeed been instrumental, completing 90% of his passes across 11 outings, averaging two tackles, 2.8 clearances and 7.8 ball recoveries per game, and also impressively winning 62% of his duels and 88% of his dribbles, as per Sofascore.

The £20k-per-week ace was once a prospect in Spain with Barcelona and has clearly developed his passing prowess from his time at the club, which has been a key factor behind the recent wave of Premier League interest.

How Todibo compares to the Premier League's best

Dubbed a "Rolls-Royce" of a centre-back by journalist Antonio Mango, Todibo has earned his stripes in France and cemented his name as one of the finest in the country, but after 114 appearances with Nice, it's perhaps time to take the leap onto the Premier League scene.

Ange could forget about Dier by unleashing Spurs academy star

Tottenham have been forced to contend with a wave of setbacks after a stunning start to the campaign.

ByAngus Sinclair Nov 15, 2023

The Evening Standard's report reveals that the player himself is actually keen on the move but, having made his Les Bleus debut in September, will be seeking assurances that his playing time will not be hindered by making such a decision.

Tottenham's defensive axis does consist of Van de Ven and Romero and proved to be as formidable as any in the division before that fateful match against former boss Mauricio Pochettino, but aside from the pair Postecoglou doesn't really have much to work with in regard to senior and reliable options.

It's an interesting mix of defenders that Football Transfers has listed as Todibo's most comparable players, with the similarities between Arsenal sensation William Saliba particularly eye-catching for those of a Tottenham persuasion.

Saliba and Todibo were actually heralded as "diamonds" by Kulig for their partnership with Nice several seasons ago, which only further strengthens the claim that he could thrive on English shores.

The Gunners centre-half, aged 22, spent several seasons on loan in his homeland after signing for Arsenal from Saint Etienne for £27m in 2019, but he has been a mainstay since the start of last season and has chalked up 52 appearances, with his rise coinciding with his club's certainly not a coincidence.

The £190k-per-week colossus ranks among the top 7% for pass completion and the top 11% for passes attempted per 90, showcasing his first-class ball-playing talent that has led to Mikel Arteta describing him as "exceptional."

With Arsenal boasting the best defensive record in the English top-flight this season while also currently topping the table, Saliba's role has been vital, making 5.7 recoveries per match and winning 61% of his ground duels.

Todibo offers a skill set that really does look custom-made for Postecoglou's fluid system, actually noted for his strength in passing and tackling by statistical site WhoScored – indeed, such attributes bolster claims from Statman Dave that he has "complete control" on the field.

£39m is certainly no small sum and would eclipse the £27m January acquisition of Steven Bergwijn in 2020, but it would be an impactful addition that could shape the success of Tottenham's exciting season under Postecoglou's guidance.

Man Utd could bench Rashford to unleash £47m star in a different role

Nothing can go right for Manchester United and Erik ten Hag at the moment. The Red Devils suffered yet another defeat at the hands of Newcastle United on Saturday night in the Premier League and were labelled as a team with "too many bad eggs" by football pundit Alan Shearer.

The lack of effort from several players was perhaps the most damning aspect of United's display at St. James' Park. On a cold night, in front of an uproarious Gallowgate End, Marcus Rashford was singled out for his subpar work-rate by Jamie Carragher as the Magpies decimated United's fullbacks on a number of occasions.

Rashford looks like a shadow of the player he was last season and could find himself out of the starting lineup for the team's upcoming matches which means Ten Hag may look to reshuffle his midfield in the meantime.

Marcus Rashford's stats this season

Rashford predominantly plays off the left which is his favoured position, as he told Gary Neville in a previous episode of The Overlap. However, since the 4-3 collapse at Copenhagen, the attacker has started on the right. Rashford played quite well there up until his controversial red card when United were two goals to the good which was the beginning of the team's demise in Denmark.

Ten Hag has preferred to utilise Alejandro Garnacho on the left flank in recent weeks and the Argentine has rewarded his manager's faith by scoring twice after the international break, including an "absolutely amazing" bicycle kick goal against Everton at Goodison Park.

Nevertheless, a change to the right hasn't helped Rashford's form at Old Trafford. His drop-off in performance levels has been quite stark compared to the previous campaign.

Particularly concerning his goalscoring form, Rashford's stats have dropped drastically. The forward's creative output has increased slightly but still not enough to warrant holding onto his starting place.

There is one option that Ten Hag should consider trying out once more should he look to take Rashford out of the firing line.

Bruno Fernandes' stats this season

Bruno Fernandes isn't everyone's cup of tea but his stats since moving to Old Trafford back in 2020 for £47m are quite phenomenal to say the least, having scored 69 goals and recording 59 assists so far at Manchester United.

Fernandes has been United's number '10' for almost four years but has dabbled in a number of different positions too, including as a second striker and a central midfielder.

However, the skipper has also made 19 appearances for the Red Devils as a winger, primarily on the right flank.

Interestingly, Fernandes had been utilised just twice as a right-winger at the Theatre of Dreams before the arrival of Ten Hag, but United have lost only one game when the Portugal international has played in that position.

Under the Dutchman's guidance, the club captain has scored three goals and registered four assists on the right side, according to Transfermarkt. His most recent appearance there was in the 3-0 derby defeat to Manchester City back in October.

Putting Bruno on the right would also allow the head coach to bring some more defensive-minded midfielders into the team to shore up the middle of the park, which has looked like a desolate wasteland in recent games for Man United. This could be the tactical switch the side needs to start picking up some big wins ahead of the Christmas period.

Arteta could supercharge Saka with £100m "monster" who wants to join Arsenal

Aside from the League Cup, Arsenal are currently fighting on all fronts this year, and while they might not be quite as free-flowing and easy on the eye as they were last season, Mikel Arteta's men have looked more defensively astute, mature and intentional in their matches this campaign.

However, a defeat to Aston Villa last time out in the Premier League has slowed them down somewhat following their last-gasp winner against Luton Town last week.

The Gunners didn't deserve to win at Villa Park on Saturday, but they might've claimed at least a point with a clinical finisher in the team, as they had registered an expected goal value of 1.47 to their hosts' 0.66 – but they just couldn't put the ball in the back of the net.

bukayo-saka-arsenal-transfer-arteta-edu-wenger-joel-campbell

So fans should be delighted with the latest player linked to the Emirates, a striker who could turn Bukayo Saka into an assist machine, and someone who has already expressed his desire to join the club, Ivan Toney.

Arsenal transfer news – Ivan Toney

According to transfers expert Fabrizio Romano, Brentford's star striker is keen to move to a top club in 2024 and has expressed his excitement and desire to join Arsenal specifically.

Talking on Kick, the Italian journalist said: “From what I’m hearing, this is one more detail on Ivan Toney, this is a rumour I’m hearing that his preference in terms of a top club move in January or the summer would be to go to Arsenal.

"From what I’m hearing Ivan Toney could be really excited by the possibility of joining Arsenal.”

Ivan Toney competing against Aston Villa's Ezri Konsa.

The former Newcastle United forward has been linked to the club in the past, but this development is a massive boost for the Gunners should they choose to pursue Toney.

However, the most significant barrier to signing the 27-year-old "monster", as described by his manager Thomas Frank, will be the price, as Sky Sports report that it will take at least £100m to secure his signature – although, for a player who scored 20 league goals last season, he might just be worth it.

Ivan Toney could supercharge Bukayo Saka

Now, the addition of Toney into this Arsenal team would instantly make them a far more worrying proposition for opposing teams, as the one-cap Englishman would likely craft his own chances with the sheer level of talent around him.

However, his clinical finishing and poacher sensibilities would help turn his teammates into assist machines, especially someone like Saka.

The Hale End graduate racked up 11 league assists last season – despite Gabriel Jesus missing chunks of the campaign through injury – and he has already registered six in the league this season, so just imagine the numbers he could produce with a number nine solely focused on finding space and finishing chances.

Furthermore, the underlying numbers of the "future icon", as dubbed by talent scout Jacek Kulig, all point towards a player calling out for more efficient players around him.

Ultimately, if Arsenal want to reach that next level and win the Premier League and Champions League, they will need an out-and-out goalscorer in the team, and Toney would be precisely that.

It also helps that his presence would likely unlock another level to Saka's game and truly set him on the path to becoming one of the best players in the world.

Rangers predicted XI vs Ross County including "electrifying" whiz and no Goldson

Glasgow Rangers are back in Scottish Premiership action for the penultimate time in 2023 as they play host to Ross County at Ibrox on Wednesday night.

The Light Blues have won each of their last six top-flight matches and will be looking to make it seven ahead of their Old Firm clash with Celtic at the weekend.

Philippe Clement's side head into this game off the back of a 2-0 win over Motherwell on Christmas Eve as they secured a relatively comfortable victory away from Glasgow.

Early goals from Kieran Dowell and Todd Cantwell in the first half helped to seal all three points for the Scottish giants and the Belgian head coach could look to rotate his starting XI with two games in quick succession.

With that in mind, here is FFC's predicted Rangers line-up to start against Ross County under the lights at Ibrox on Wednesday night…

1 Jack Butland

Rangers goalkeeper Jack Butland

The starting goalkeeper should be Jack Butland once again. He has already racked up 12 clean sheets in 18 league matches since his summer move from Crystal Palace.

An impressive save percentage of 81% shows that the 30-year-old giant has been a formidable force for opposition players to put the ball past.

2 James Tavernier

At right-back, the captain and talisman James Tavernier should start. The English dynamo has racked up nine goals and five assists in 18 top-flight starts for the Gers so far this season.

Rangers' penalty taker and skipper, he will be hoping to catch up with the Hoops in order to lift the Premiership title for the second time in his career in 2024.

3 John Souttar

Rangers centre-back John Souttar.

The first change to the XI could come at the heart of the defence as John Souttar could come in for Connor Goldson, who suffered a knock towards the end of the clash on Sunday.

Clement may not want to risk the former Brighton colossus ahead of the clash with Celtic and this would open the door for the Scotland international to return to the starting XI on the right of the centre-back pairing.

Souttar has started eight Premiership games this term and has showcased his dominant defensive skills. He has won an eye-catching 84% of his ground duels and 70% of his aerial contests across ten appearances in total.

The former Hearts star, as evidenced by his exceptional physical qualities, is a solid performer at the back for the Gers and is more than a capable replacement for Goldson.

4 Leon Balogun

Rangers defender Leon Balogun.

Alongside Souttar, Leon Balogun should retain his spot at the back after a terrific showing against Motherwell last time out. He put in a fantastic performance in defence and was Clement's unsung hero on the day.

Rangers titan who had more touches than Cantwell was Clement's unsung hero

The experienced defender produced an imperious performance at the back against Motherwell.

ByDan Emery Dec 24, 2023 5 Ridvan Yilmaz

Ridvan Yilmaz

The Turkey international – Ridvan Yilmaz – should start again at left-back after a solid showing last time out. He made four interceptions and created one chance in 90 minutes on the pitch.

Borna Barisic could be in trouble if the former Besiktas star is able to put together a run of impressive performances to nail down the number three position moving forward.

6 Leon King

Glasgow Rangers defender Leon King.

At the base of the midfield, Clement could make a second change to his XI as academy starlet Leon King could be unleashed from the start.

With John Lundstram, Ryan Jack, and Nicolas Raskin out of action, the Belgian head coach could rotate Dujon Sterling – to avoid fatigue – and start the youth team graduate in his place.

King came off the bench against Ross County as a defensive midfielder and could provide an excellent shield, as a natural centre-back, in front of the back four.

His instincts as a central defender could also allow him to drop into a back three in and out of possession when needed to deal with transitions effectively and allow the full-backs to bomb on with adequate cover through the middle of the pitch.

7 Kieran Dowell

Rangers midfielder Kieran Dowell.

Kieran Dowell could start once again in midfield after his impressive display on Sunday, in what was just his third league start of the campaign.

The summer signing from Norwich City opened the scoring with a well-taken goal as his initial press led to a one-two with Cyriel Dessers that then allowed him to take a touch before firing into the roof of the net.

8 Todd Cantwell

Todd Cantwell

Another former Norwich playmaker – Todd Cantwell – could line up alongside Dowell and just in front of King to complete the midfield three.

The English whiz scored the second goal last weekend with a fine finish from Abdallah Sima's assist, and came close to a second with a rasping volley that was tipped onto the crossbar.

9 Rabbi Matondo

Rangers winger Rabbi Matondo.

The third and final change to the XI could involve Rabbi Matondo being unleashed from the start ahead of youngster Ross McCausland.

Clement could bring the Wales international in as part of squad rotation to ensure that his squad is refreshed and ready to go again, whilst McCausland did not have his best match in a Gers shirt last time out.

The Northern Ireland international only completed 57% of his attempted passes and created one chance in 72 minutes on the right wing.

Matondo, who was once hailed for his "electrifying" pace by ex-boss Ryan Giggs, has managed one goal and two assists in the Premiership this term, despite having three starts to his name.

The pacey winger could use his speed and direct play to create opportunities for his fellow attackers in the final third, after McCausland struggled to do that effectively on Sunday.

10 Cyriel Dessers

Rangers forward Cyriel Dessers.

At the top end of the pitch, Dessers could keep his place as the manager is not currently blessed with a great deal of depth in his position.

Rangers did not have a natural striker on the bench on Sunday, with Kemar Roofe and Danilo out, and this could allow the Nigeria international to start again.

Edu could make January move for club’s high earner who really likes Arsenal

Arsenal, and sporting director Edu by extension, could move for a club's star in January – with there being a belief he likes the idea of joining.

Arsenal sliding down Premier League table

The Gunners have endured a torrid time of late, winning just once in their last five Premier League games and now five points off table-toppers Liverpool.

Arsenal express interest over move to sign "brutal" star ahead of Man City

This would be some statement from the Gunners…

ByTom Cunningham Jan 4, 2024

After the club spent over £200 million last summer, in an effort to help them clinch their first league title in 20 years, manager Mikel Arteta is under pressure to turn things around and quickly.

Arsenal luckily have 15 days till their next top flight encounter, a home clash against struggling Crystal Palace on January 20, which gives club transfer chiefs time to potentially bolster Arteta's ranks.

The north Londoners have been linked with signing a new striker, midfielder and full-backs this month. They were however dealt a major blow in their pursuit of top target Ivan Toney, with Brentford boss Thomas Frank confirming he is set to remain at the club this month.

Brentford striker Ivan Toney.

"He is a Brentford player. He is here, we miss a few offensive players and I cannot see why we should sell him. I would love to have him here for a long time," said Frank on Toney's future at Brentford.

"It is not for me to discuss (an offer), but if I could ever recommend one, it would need to be an unbelievable price, so he will stay here."

FFP restrictions have also given Arsenal a pretty tight January budget to work with, according to reports (Miguel Delaney), so Edu and co may have to be clever and make the most ideal signings possible.

One player who could fall into that bracket is Crystal Palace star Michael Olise. Since returning from injury, the Englishman has gone on to enjoy one of the best seasons of his career to date, scoring five goals and registering an assist in just nine league appearances.

Arsenal were linked with a summer move for Olise, and now it appears they could reignite that interest mid-season.

Olise prefers to join Arsenal

According to Football Transfers, Arsenal could potentially make a January move for Olise and it is believed the £100,000-per-week midfielder would "very much prefer" to join them over Man United.

While a summer move is seen as more likely as things stand, the report claims a January deal is still possible if Arsenal make significant sales first.

Eagles boss Roy Hodgson certainly hopes that won't be the case. The former England boss is a big fan of Olise, as is Arteta apparently, with Hodgson calling Olise an "enormous talent".

"What I make of him is that I think he is an enormous talent," said Hodgson.

"He has got a great possibility to have a wonderful career and a wonderful future. We can only hope we at Crystal Palace can give him that platform.”

Sunderland make Kieffer Moore top transfer target as reporter shares update

Sunderland are believed to have identified an "amazing" player as their "top" target in the January transfer window, according to an update from journalist Alan Nixon.

Sunderland transfer news

The Black Cats will feel that they are right in the Championship promotion mix currently, finding themselves seventh in the table and only outside the playoff places on goal difference.

Michael Beale's reign is still in its infancy, however, with the Englishman replacing Tony Mowbray as manager last month, and he may feel that he needs to bring in players who can suit his style of play in the January transfer window, in order for his team to have the chance to making it back into the Premier League.

Sunderland have been linked with a host of different attacking players recently, including Barnsley forward John McAtee, who they are looking to sign ahead of fellow Championship side Ipswich Town. Blackburn Rovers attacker Sam Gallagher is also seen as a target for the Black Cats, and he is seen as a good alternative for Bournemouth ace Kieffer Moore.

It would certainly be a surprise if the club failed to complete a single signing in the whole of January, and a fresh update has outlined which individual is wanted by them more than most.

Sunderland want Kieffer Moore

According to reliable reporter Nixon on X [via Sunderland News], Sunderland see Bournemouth striker Moore as a top transfer target in January.

He is thought to be at the "top of the list" when it comes to reinforcements this month, as Beale looks to complete some important business to aid his side's promotion chances, with no bid made for Gallagher due to their desire to land Moore.

Moore could be a fantastic addition by Sunderland this month, possessing so much experience at the top level, including playing for Wales at major tournaments, scoring 12 goals in 40 caps for his country in the process. The 31-year-old is someone who has been valued by so many of his managers down the years, and former Cardiff City boss Mick McCarthy once lauded his quality as a player, saying:

"He's been terrific. Not only that, when he's not scored he has been on the pitch almost every minute of every game. The shift he puts in every week is amazing. We have not got a direct replacement for him, so he has played all the games. Testimony to that is that he knows we haven't got a direct replacement and he knows he is going to play all the games, but he doesn't take his foot off the gas, he keeps going."

Moore is an attacking player who could give Sunderland that extra bit of firepower between now and the end of the season, with his physicality and aerial presence a nightmare for defenders to handle at times, and he will surely be keen to get more playing time away from Bournemouth.

His aforementioned international pedigree speaks volumes about his ability, and he has also netted 47 times in 155 Championship appearances, showing what a force he can be in the division.

O’Neil can replace Neto in Wolves swoop for "pure class" EFL star

Wolverhampton Wanderers have yet to dip their toes into the January transfer market as yet as Gary O’Neil aims to take his time regarding any new signings.

One thing remains clear, however, the manager must bring in another attacking option or two this month, especially as he is rather lightweight in this area.

Hwang Hee-Chan – their top scorer this season with 11 goals – is on international duty with South Korea at the Asian Cup, whereas Fabio Silva and Sasa Kalajdzic have been sent out on loan to Glasgow Rangers and Eintracht Frankfurt, respectively.

Wolverhampton Wanderers manager Gary O'Neil.

This leaves only Matheus Cunha, Pedro Neto and Pablo Sarabia as O’Neil’s attacking options, and it is evident someone else needs to come in and bolster this area.

With this in mind, the Old Gold have been linked with a winger who is starring in the Championship this season, and he could turn into a wonderful signing.

Wolves transfer news – Jack Clarke

According to the Northern Echo, the Molineux outfit have shown recent interest in signing Sunderland winger Jack Clarke this month as they aim to strengthen their attacking options.

He won’t come cheap, however, especially as the Black Cats knocked back bids of £10m from Burnley in the summer transfer window and, according to former manager Tony Mowbray, the club "wouldn't even consider" offers under £20m for their prized asset.

Wolves could be set to face some intense competition for his signature. Fellow Premier League sides West Ham United, Everton, Crystal Palace, Burnley, and Bournemouth are the other clubs keen on luring him to the top flight and this could prove to be a major stumbling block for O’Neil.

Clarke would be a shrewd signing judging by his form this season for Sunderland and with the future of Neto unclear amid interest from Arsenal, the Portuguese winger could be nearing the end of his spell in the Midlands.

Indeed, Sky Sports reporter Johnny Philips gave an update on his future at the start of the year, saying: “Neto is expecting chance to leave at end of season, Mendes lining up options.”

Clarke would be a perfect replacement for the Wolves gem amid this update on his future, without a shadow of a doubt.

Pedro Neto’s season in numbers

The 23-year-old endured an injury-hit campaign during 2022/23 as he missed 27 games for club and country due to suffering an ankle injury and this meant he was ruled out of the 2022 World Cup.

He recovered in time for the start of the current season and enjoyed a solid start, registering eight assists and a goal in his first ten matches, and it appeared as though the winger was back to his best on the right wing.

A hamstring injury ruled him out for a further eight games but he enjoyed a productive return to action, grabbing an assist in the recent FA Cup clash against Brentford.

Halfway through the Premier League campaign, Neto currently ranks third in the squad for goals and assists (eight) along with ranking third for big chances created (five) and first for key passes per game (2.3) and it demonstrates just how effective he has been in the final third so far.

Keeping him until the summer at least could prove to be vital in their charge for a top half finish in the league. If he does depart come the summer, Clarke would be a more than able replacement for the 23-year-old, as he has shown his own eye for goal in the second tier since the start of last season.

Jack Clarke could replace Pedro Neto

Clarke played for Leeds United and Tottenham Hotspur during the embryonic stages of his career, making 28 and four appearances, respectively as he failed to really thrive at either club.

It wasn’t until a permanent move to Sunderland ahead of the 2022/23 campaign that the 6 foot 1 gem began to show his true talents, and he was exceptional as the Black Cats reached the Championship playoffs, just missing out on a place in the final.

The 23-year-old registered 21 goal contributions – nine goals and 12 assists – in the second tier last season, and he hasn’t slowed down during the current campaign.

The winger has already notched 12 goals and grabbed three assists in just 26 league ties this term and the club are clearly relying on him to be their main attacking outlet.

Clarke isn’t just leading the way among the squad with goals and assists (15), but he is also ranked first for big chances created (eight), key passes per game (2.4) and successful dribbles per game (3.7) and it is clear that he has been Sunderland’s finest player by a large margin during the current campaign.

While Neto typically operates on the right, Clarke is versatile in that he can play on either wing to great effect and this is another reason why he would be a solid replacement for the Wolves gem.

The 6 foot 1 star has some unfinished business as he failed to make a Premier League appearance during his spell at Spurs, but there is no doubt he has improved significantly since then, and he could take the league by storm should he make the step-up this month.

The winger was lauded by football writer Philip West last season, saying: “That is class from Jack Clarke. Pure class, and he’s just showed why Mowbray was right to stick with him.

He has been different class in recent months for the club, and they wouldn’t be anywhere near the top six without his goal contributions.

In fact, the former Leeds starlet has contributed to 39% of Sunderland’s goal tally this term and this just proves how vital he is in their promotion charge.

Of course, Michael Beale won’t be looking to lose him this month, yet if an offer of £20m plus arrives, the club may have to seriously consider it.

This may be too much for Wolves to shell out in January, yet they could potentially target a summer move for the winger who is thriving.

Wolves and Fosun given Armando Broja transfer ultimatum by Chelsea

There are now only five days to go until the transfer deadline on 1st February, and Gary O'Neil and Wolves still haven't managed to add a new striker to their squad, having allowed Sasa Kalajdzic and Fabio Silva to leave on loan for Eintracht Frankfurt and Rangers respectively.

One potential target for the Molineux outfit is Chelsea's Armando Broja, who doesn't appear to have a long-term future in west London. Wolves have been in touch, along with fellow Premier League sides Fulham, Crystal Palace and West Ham, to express their interest in a potential deal. The Blues are willing to sanction an initial loan, but they're insistent upon a £35m obligation to buy at the end of it.

As you can see in the table above, Broja has appeared in 19 games for Chelsea this season, and started five of the last seven with striker rival Nicolas Jackson away at the Africa Cup of Nations. Clearly, though, Mauricio Pochettino has been dissatisfied with his output, and is ready to move on.

Fosun now receive Broja ultimatum

According to transfer insider Dean Jones, Broja is Wolves' top striker target this month. However, Chelsea have issued an ultimatum to Fosun, telling them that they need to agree to the obligation to buy if they want to get a deal done. Wolves may feel as if they can test the Blues' resolve on the price tag, however, given that they clearly want rid of the Albanian.

Speaking to GiveMeSport, Jones said: "Wolves' intent around Broja is definitely there. They will sign a striker, and they’d like it to be Broja. Chelsea say it can be done, but with an obligation.

"If the obligation is £35m, then that's a big call from Wolves if they're willing to throw themselves at that one because there's a reason that Chelsea are putting an obligation in there.

"That’s telling you that they don't want the player anymore if they're saying that Wolves have to buy him because if Chelsea still had faith in Broja, they would be sending him to Wolves to score the goals they've been hoping he would get and bring him back into the picture to do a job for them. But that's not the case at the moment. Chelsea are saying it's got to be an obligation."

If Wolves don't respond positively to the aforementioned ultimatum, there are a couple of different targets they could pivot towards in the final days of the window. One of those is Getafe striker Borja Mayoral, who's been watched closely and shares the same agent as Hugo Bueno.

Crystal Palace and Arsenal are interested too, but with Getafe demanding £20m, he too could prove overly expensive for a side walking a financial tightrope.

That could lead Wolves to favour Al-Shabab's Habib Diallo, who's apparently grown unhappy in Saudi Arabia and wants to return to Europe. There's rival interest in France and Germany, but they're apparently ready to loan him out if they receive an appropriate offer.

Wolves have clearly taken ample time to assess their options and lay the groundwork for some potential deals, but we're fast approaching the phase of the window where they need to press the button and move forward.
