WBA: Predicted XI & injury news v Reading

Today sees West Bromwich Albion take on Reading in both teams’ penultimate match of the regular Championship season.

To be frank, neither team has anything much to play for, with Reading now mathematically safe and West Brom nowhere near the play-off places.

However, having had his future cleared up, Baggies manager Steve Bruce will not see it that way and will instead be looking for some inspired performances from his players, who will be looking to build some momentum to take into next season.

In terms of injuries, Conor Townsend is a doubt for today, but luckily it is not through injury, with the 29-year-old on standby to attend the birth of his child, which is due any day now.

According to Bruce, Albion academy graduate Zac Ashworth will be in the squad, with the 19-year-old likely to take Townsend’s place, as per West Brom News.

Baggies fans will be glad to know that there are no new injury concerns heading into the match against Paul Ince’s side.

With the latest news in mind, here is how we at Football Fan Cast expect West Bromwich Albion to line up against Reading today.

West Brom XI – Button; Ajayi, O’Shea, Clarke; Reach, Livermore, Molumby, Ashworth; Gardner-Hickman; Carroll, Grant

We expect the team to line-up in a 3-4-1-2 formation.

Our prediction sees just one change from the side which started against Coventry City last time out, with 19-year-old academy graduate Ashworth – who has been dubbed “excellent” by Joe Chapman – coming in for the “dependable” Townsend, in the words of Kieran Doody.

With nothing to play for in these last two games, Bruce can afford to give youth prospects like Ashworth an opportunity to assert himself in the Baggies’ first-team.

Up top, Andy Carroll will be hoping to make the manager rue the decision over his contract renewal if he is to start today, with the 33-year-old set to be released at the end of the season after it was reported by The Athletic that Bruce would not offer him a new contract.

Tottenham Hotspur: Ex-Sky reporter shares big Lo Celso update

Journalist Matteo Moretto, formerly of Sky Sports, has now shared an exit update out of Tottenham Hotspur involving current Villarreal loanee Giovani Lo Celso.

The Lowdown: Lo Celso shines…

The Argentine has been shining at the Estadio de la Cerámica under Unai Emery after being unable to cut it at Spurs over the first half of the 2021/2022 Premier League season.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-newest-updates/” title=”Tottenham newest updates…” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Spanish media have hailed the performances of Lo Celso, even calling him a ‘giant’ during his time at Villarreal, prompting the La Liga club to set their sights on a permanent deal.

Tottenham are apparently confident they can agree a fee around the £30 million mark, according to Football Insider, with former Sky journalist Moretto sharing an update.

The Latest: Lo Celso update emerges…

According to the reporter, speaking to Twitter page ‘All About Argentina’, Villarreal will indeed try to buy Lo Celso following his brilliant spell on loan.

It is also believed that talks with Tottenham are imminent with negotiations set to begin ‘soon’.

The Verdict: Time to go?

Lo Celso’s quality has been highlighted by his stellar spell at Villarreal and it will be slightly disappointing to see a clearly capable player leave north London, if they can agree terms.

Villarreal shot stopper Geronimo Rulli recently claimed that his compatriot is ‘a top player in the world’ and you could argue that claim has been backed by his recent displays.

However, the South American simply didn’t turn it on often enough, with Spurs critics even branding Lo Celso a ‘passenger’ earlier this season.

Villarreal seems like a great match and it’s now up to Fabio Paratici to negotiate terms suitable for both Spurs and the Europa League winners.

Newcastle team news vs Man City

Chris Waugh is buzzing over some early Team News for Newcastle United before they play Manchester City away from home in the Premier League.

The Lowdown: Wilson return?

Speaking in his pre-game press conference ahead of the match (via The Athletic), Eddie Howe revealed that Callum Wilson has been training all week, and looks ‘very good’ from a physical perspective.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/newcastle-news-6/” title=”Newcastle news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The former Burnley and AFC Bournemouth manager then added that there is a ‘good chance’ that he will be involved against the reigning top-flight champions.

The Latest: Waugh buzzing

Taking to Twitter, The Athletic journalist Waugh was left buzzing when he heard the news from Howe:

“Callum Wilson looks like he may be available for Sunday, which is a huge boost for NUFC.”

The Verdict: Relief

It will certainly comes as a relief to both Howe and the Toon Army that Wilson seems to have recovered well from an injury that has ruled him out since December.

He still remains their top scorer in the Premier League with six goals so far this season, and to have any chance of getting anything against a wounded City side, you would think that Wilson would have to feature.

Nonetheless, with safety all but secured in the top flight, this is about the Magpies now finishing off the term strongly ahead of what could be a very exciting summer transfer window at St. James’ Park.

Sunderland handed Bailey Wright boost

Early Sunderland team news has emerged as they prepare to face Wycombe in the League One play-off final on Saturday…

What’s the latest?

Alex Neil has confirmed that Bailey Wright and Lynden Gooch should be fine for the showpiece occasion at Wembley after picking up knocks in the semi-final tie against Sheffield Wednesday.

Aside from that, the Black Cats have no other fresh concerns to worry about heading into the game this weekend and look set to have the same squad available to them.

The 40-year-old told the club’s official website, via Sunderland Echo: “I think that we’ve come through both of those legs relatively unscathed, which is good.”We’ve got a couple of bumps and bruises, Bailey Wright got a bit of a split round his eye and I think Goochy had one on his head as well. But there’s nothing too significant, so we’re hoping that we can get the lads through this week so that they’re fine and firing and ready to go.” Supporters will be buzzing

Sunderland supporters will be buzzing by this news for multiple reasons.

Firstly, there are no new injuries to contend with, which is a huge relief as it means that all of the players who contributed to the semi-final win will also be available this weekend. It is a gigantic clash at Wembley with promotion on the line, and Neil will need as many of his players fit as possible to give them the best chance of making it back to the Championship.

The Stadium of Light faithful will also be delighted to hear that Wright should be fine after sustaining a knock against the Owls. Having him in the team against Wycombe will be a big boost, as he leaves it all out on the pitch and will put his body on the line for the club.

After the second leg against Wednesday, Roker Report writer Philip West heaped praise on the 29-year-old, tweeting: “Bailey Wright, what a warrior. Bloodstained shirt, blood trickling down his face, but he was an absolute rock tonight. That’s what playing for this club is about. Heart of a lion.”

The Australian was magnificent at the back that night, winning six duel and making one clearance, block and interception (as per Sofascore). That kind of performance, perfectly summed up by West, is what Sunderland will need on Saturday to see off Wycombe.

This is why Black Cats supporters will surely be buzzing with this update from Neil and will now be hoping that Wright is named in the starting XI at Wembley.

Aston Villa: West Brom make contact for Conor Hourihane

West Brom have made contact over a move for Aston Villa midfielder Conor Hourihane, according to Football Insider report.

The Lowdown: Hourihane in the Championship

The 31-year-old has only made six Villa appearances over the last two seasons, plying his trade on loan in the Championship with both Swansea City and Sheffield United.

Labelled as ‘excellent’ by Steve Cooper last season, Hourihane has suffered playoff heartbreak in both campaigns. He’s out of contract at Villa Park at the end of June, and it looks as if another stint in the second-tier is on the cards for the Irishman.

The Latest: Source shares update

Football Insider shared an update regarding West Brom and Hourihane early on Thursday morning after being informed by a Baggies source. They claimed that Villa’s rivals have registered their interest, with Steve Bruce a ‘big admirer’ of the central midfielder.

A Villa Park exit is expected as Hourihane isn’t in line to receive a new deal under Steven Gerrard, meaning he can leave for nothing.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/aston-villa-latest-news/” title=”Aston Villa latest news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Makes sense?

Hourihane played a key role in helping Villa to the Premier League and was a regular in the 2019/20 campaign as Dean Smith’s side narrowly avoided the drop.

An exit over the coming weeks does seem to make sense, though, with NSWE and Villa looking to go to the next level under Gerrard by spending over £150m ahead of his first full season in charge.

A short trip to The Hawthorns could be the right move for the midfielder, and if a deal goes through, he’ll be looking to earn promotion to the Premier League once again.

WBA must complete Carter-Vickers transfer

West Bromwich Albion secured their first signing of the upcoming summer transfer window on Thursday as they announced the capture of John Swift from Reading.

Now that they have one deal confirmed for the summer, the Midlands club and Steve Bruce can move on to other areas of the squad that they feel may need strengthening.

Looking at the defence, despite making 39 appearances in the Championship this season, Kyle Bartley is currently the oldest centre-back in West Brom’s squad.

With the 31-year-old’s current contract at The Hawthorns set to expire in the summer of 2023, the Baggies could well look to sign a long-term replacement for the Englishman this summer.

One figure with whom West Brom have been linked recently and who could fit this bill is Cameron Carter-Vickers.

Having spent the 2021/22 season out on loan from Tottenham Hotspur again, this time securing the Scottish Premiership title with Celtic, the centre-back showed how formidable a defensive unit he can be.

With 43 interceptions and 22 tackles to his name in the Scottish top flight, the American ended the season with the highest average of clearances per game (4.2) in Ange Postecoglou’s squad.

Bartley 2.0

Taking into account how Bartley ended the campaign with the highest average for clearances per game (four) in West Brom’s squad, this highlight how similar the defensive duo are in that regard.

Described by Celtic full-back Greg Taylor as a player who has “got all the tools”, as well as being called a “huge” part of why the Hoops were so successful this season, Carter-Vickers reportedly has a price tag of £6m.

His overall league performances for Celtic earned him a season rating of 7.36/10 from WhoScored, which would have made him by far the highest-rated player at The Hawthorns by the same metric.

Even though Celtic are reportedly and rather unsurprisingly looking to turn Carter-Vickers’ loan deal into a permanent move, the Baggies should definitely jump in and try and convince the defender to make a return to England and help to take West Brom back to the Premier League.

If the Midlands club are able to bring the 24-year-old to The Hawthorns, he could well go on to become an ideal long-term replacement for Bartley given his clear defensive talents.

Crystal Palace linked with Chris Richards

Crystal Palace are eyeing an ambitious move for Bayern Munich defender Chris Richards, according to The Telegraph.

The Lowdown: Richards profiled

The 22-year-old, who has been hailed as an ‘athletic freak’ by former USA national team scout Thomas Rongen, can play anywhere across the back four.

Primarily a centre-back, Richards is valued by Transfermarkt at a career-high £6.75m. He has spent time out on loan with Hoffenheim after joining Bayern Munich from FC Dallas in 2018.

Richards has only made 10 senior appearances for Bayern and is under contract until 2025, but it looks as if Patrick Vieira has his eyes on a move for the pacey USA international.

The Latest: Palace interest in Richards

The Telegraph’s Mike McGrath shared a Palace transfer update on Monday afternoon, revealing that Lens midfielder Cheick Doucoure is the club’s priority this summer.

McGrath added that Richards has also been looked at and is an ambitious target, with a move a possibility.

The Verdict: One to watch…

It looks as if Doucoure and Sam Johnstone are primary targets for Palace early in the transfer window, although Richards is also one to keep an eye on following the update from the reliable reporter.

You can see why Vieira would want to bolster his centre-back ranks after relying heavily on Marc Guehi and Joachim Andersen during his first season at Selhurst Park.

James Tomkins and Jaroslaw Jack are out of contract at the end of June, while Nathan Ferguson has struggled to stay fit, so signing Richards could be a shrewd move.

Aston Villa can land Grealish 2.0 in Gareth Bale

Aston Villa’s transfer business is currently in full swing, although there is still perhaps a nagging feeling that they are missing something, with the void vacated by former skipper Jack Grealish last summer having yet to be adequately filled.

The boyhood Villa man had proved instrumental in dragging the former European champions out of the second tier in 2019, before again stealing the limelight to help maintain their Premier League status the following season, netting a vital, final-day strike to ensure the club’s safety.

Another decisive season followed in the 2020/21 campaign as he bagged 16 goal contributions under then-boss Dean Smith, despite a lengthy absence that essentially put paid to any hopes of European qualification for the Midlands outfit.

Having held firm for so long, unwilling to part ways with their prized asset, a British record, £100m offer from Manchester City ultimately proved too good to ignore, with the Englishman becoming just another special talent in a squad full to the brim with quality.

Perhaps he misses his talismanic role at Villa Park, having somewhat blended into the background at the Etihad, although the 26-year-old’s decision has already resulted in silverware, as Pep Guardiola’s claimed a fourth league title in five seasons with a dramatic last day triumph against, ironically, Villa.

Jubilant scenes ensued for City – and in particular, Grealish – while Steven Gerrard’s side were left reflecting on a campaign that had ended with a whimper, the club languishing in 14th place despite spending over £100m throughout the campaign.

In the absence of their former leading man, there is no question that the club have faltered, with even the statement loan signing of Philippe Coutinho in January – a move which has since become permanent – failing to inspire too great a response, despite an early flurry of goals from the Brazilian upon his arrival.

Gerrard’s men, it would seem, are simply in need of a figurehead – a man to produce something from nothing when they need it most. Step forward, Gareth Bale.

That is the view of pundit Tony Cascarino, who suggested that the Villans may be a suitable destination for the Welshman, as reported by Birmingham Live, with the one-time Southampton man having only just confirmed his expected departure from Real Madrid after almost a decade in the Spanish capital.

It has proved a largely toxic last few years or so for the 102-cap international with Los Blancos, with the winger proving a “controversial” figure in Madrid, in the words of one journalist, for his desire to put his country over his club, a fact only heightened with that infamous ‘Wales.Golf.Madrid’ banner.

Despite that bitter and long overdue ending, the former Tottenham man has provided a good return on the La Liga side’s initial £85.3m investment, scoring 106 goals and providing 67 assists in 258 games across all competitions, winning three league titles and a staggering five Champions Leagues in that time.

The last of those European triumphs came last weekend as Carlo Ancelotti’s side ran out 1-0 winners over Liverpool in Paris, although Bale was, as expected, simply a bystander to proceedings, having largely been overlooked for selection in the most recent campaign.

That lack of game time may be a concern to Gerrard and co, although as he proved on international duty back in March, the £528k-per-week gem still has the ability to grab the game by the scruff of the neck even when not fully fit, netting twice in a vital 2-1 win over Austria in Cardiff – the winger an undoubted “legend” for his country, according to manager Robert Page.

Any doubters should also look to his form during the 2020/21 season following his return to Spurs, when he scored a remarkable 16 goals in just 20 games for the club in all competitions, 11 of those strikes coming in the league.

He may well not be what he was, although at just 32 he is still young enough to make an impact for any side, with Villa in need of someone with such game-winning nous and vast experience at the highest level, while he provides the added bonus of being available on a free.

The hole left by Grealish remains, NSWE should turn to Bale to fill it.

Wolves must secure Brereton-Diaz transfer

Wolves didn’t give their fans too much to shout about in terms of the team’s attacking power throughout the latest Premier League campaign.

In 38 top-flight matches, the Old Gold found the net just 38 times, leaving only the three relegated clubs with fewer goals.

One man who arguably let the side down in terms of being Wolves’ regular and consistent goalscorer is Raul Jimenez. In 34 league appearances, the 31-year-old netted just six times, which still made him the Old Gold’s top scorer.

Now that the season has come to an end, with Wolves finishing 10th in the table, the focus can switch to the upcoming summer transfer window, giving Bruno Lage the chance to strengthen his squad ahead of the 2022/23 campaign.

One player with whom the club have been linked recently and who could come in and potentially be an upgrade on Jimenez is Blackburn Rovers striker Ben Brereton-Diaz.

Last month, a one-year extension was triggered on his contract at Ewood Park, but it was also reported that they still expect the Chilean to leave the club this summer.

During his time at Blackburn, the 23-year-old has scored 31 goals and delivered 12 assists in 127 senior appearances, highlighting his clear attacking talent.

This latest season saw the Chile international find the net 22 times in 37 Championship appearances, showing that he also has what it takes to be a regular goal threat, something that Wolves certainly needed in their recent campaign.

Last August, Tony Mowbray said that he hoped Brereton-Diaz would be “hungry for goals” for his current club, which is exactly what he turned out to be by finishing the season as their top scorer.

Labelled an “elite” striker by Gary Brazil, the Blackburn star racked up 46 more shots at goal than Jimenez, while he also had a higher percentage of shots on target than the 31-year-old.

With a reported price tag of £20m, bringing the Chile striker to Molineux could be just what the Old Gold need in order to freshen up their attack and make them a deadlier team next season.

Also, given the age difference between him and Jimenez, Wolves could have their ideal long-term replacement for the Mexican.

Leeds progressing talks with Marc Roca

Leeds United are getting close to securing the transfer of Bayern Munich midfielder Marc Roca.

What’s the news?

In a recent Twitter post from journalist and transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, he had this to say on the matter.

“Leeds are progressing in talks with Bayern for Marc Roca. Bayern are asking for €15m fee, negotiations underway – Leeds hope to get the deal done this week.

“West Ham have also explored this possibility but Leeds are leading the race, as Phil Hay reported.”

In a more recent post from Romano, he revealed that Leeds “have reached an agreement” with the player over personal terms and that a four-year deal is ready for him to sign.

He then added that talks between the two clubs are progressing well.

Romano ended his latest tweet saying that Jesse Marsch wants Roca and that the deal is a “work in progress with positive feelings.”

Taking all of this into account, it seems as though the 25-year-old could be at Elland Road in the coming days and being announced as a new Leeds player.

Leeds fans will be buzzing

As a product of Espanyol’s youth system, the midfielder made 172 appearances for the club across their senior and youth sides.

In those appearances, Roca scored nine goals and provided six assists before joining Bayern in October 2020.

Since then, the midfielder has only made 24 appearances for Julian Nagelsmann’s team across all competitions.

Having already secured deals for Brenden Aaronson and Rasmus Kristensen, it will surely have plenty of Leeds fans buzzing to see another new face put pen to paper on a deal at the Yorkshire club, especially one so talented as Roca.

Leeds ended up losing 14 of the 18 league games that Kalvin Phillips didn’t feature in this season so having another defensive midfielder in the squad that could fill in for the Englishman would add some much-needed depth to that area of the squad.

In fact, with just nine Bundesliga games under his belt throughout his latest campaign, the Spaniard still managed to make seven successful tackles as well as eight interceptions and seven blocks, showing that he is a capable and consistent defensive player when given the chance to play.

A fine technician capable at both ends of the pitch, he’d be very valuable asset to Marsch next term.
