Newcastle United is in desperate need of some fresh blood in the centre-forward department.
Not only are the Toon having to come to terms with Alexander Isak’s anticipated exit from St James’ Park, they are also light on their feet up top owing to Callum Wilson leaving the Premier League club behind this summer for a fresh chance at West Ham United.
With Isak also soon to be potentially out of the picture, that would leave the Magpies with just 21-year-old William Osula as an option to lead the line.
Therefore, it’s make-or-break territory for Eddie Howe’s side this month heading into September’s looming deadline, as they frantically look around now for striker recruits to boost the mood on Tyneside.

Newcastle confident about signing £50m star
Thankfully, the rumour mill has been going into overdrive linking the Premier League outfit with a whole host of exciting striker options.
Indeed, reports have even suggested that hot-and-cold Chelsea attacker Nicolas Jackson is on the Toon agenda, alongside the top-flight side eyeing up in-demand Porto forward Samu Aghehowa, with the likes of Aston Villa also keen.
FC Porto's SamuOmorodioncelebrates scoring their first goal
However, away from this growing list of names, a report by the Daily Mail has stated that Newcastle remain confident about sealing a deal for long-term target Yoane Wissa.
The Toon will look to line up a move for the wantaway Brentford striker when Liverpool return with a new bid for Isak, having had an eye-watering £110m move turned away already. It’s stated that a mammoth £150m bid could get the pricey move up and running instead.
Yoane Wissa
To add more fuel to the fire, it’s also stated that a move for Wissa to finally come to Tyneside would be back on the cards if Brentford can seal their own replacement, with £50m perhaps the magic amount here to see the Bees part ways with their star man.
This is a far more likely move than the waiting game surrounding Benjamin Sesko, with Wissa’s potential arrival on the scene also gifting Howe and Co. a dream Wilson upgrade after the declining 33-year-old veteran departed for East London.
How Wissa is a dream Wilson upgrade
Whilst Wilson’s playing days at the Toon had worryingly begun to fizzle out last season, Wissa was continuing to be a man possessed in front of goal for Brentford.
Last campaign, Wissa – who has been dubbed “incredible” in the past by ex-Bees boss Thomas Frank – would help himself to a devastating 20 goals in all competitions. On the contrary, his ageing counterpart would fail to muster up a single Premier League effort from 18 outings, as he sank more and more into the background as an unwanted member of Howe’s squad.

Wilson might well be experiencing a depressing decline in performances, but the same can not be said for his Congolese counterpart, with that aforementioned 20-goal haul last season the sturdiest amount of strikes the 28-year-old has powered home across his four-season stint at Brentford.
The more experienced Wilson does have the added stature of 88 Premier League goals next to his name, with Wissa lagging behind on 45 strikes, but it’s unlikely that amount will increase too much for the Hammers, with the 33-year-old a regular in the treatment room when still situated at St James’ Park.
Staggeringly, the ex-AFC Bournemouth forward was missing from 57 games across the last two seasons through injury, meaning his once-notorious impact substitute billing took a beating. On the contrary, Wissa missed just six across the same period.
However, unlike Wilson, who had to frequently rely on scraps on Tyneside, the “remarkable” £50m striker – as he was further lauded by football journalist Zach Lowy – will surely be Howe’s main man in a post-Isak reality.
Yoane Wissa celebrates for Brentford
With Anthony Elanga also by his side, it will be a thrilling new dawn ahead for Newcastle in attack, as Wilson is likely to be quickly forgotten about, too, if Wissa is heroically leading the line.

Captain wants the team to be as good as Sri Lanka had been before 2014

Coming off three limited overs series wins in a row, men’s captain Charith Asalanka has serious aspirations for this team: let’s be as good as Sri Lanka had been before 2014.That 2007-2014 side had arguably been Sri Lanka’s greatest ever outfit, getting to no fewer than five World Cup finals (three in T20Is and two in ODIs), before finally winning the 2014 T20 title.Limited overs performances in particular had fallen off a cliff for Sri Lanka after 2015. But on the heels of an ODI series win against India, and a T20I and ODI series victory against West Indies, Asalanka is hoping to recapture some old magic.Related

SL vs NZ T20Is: A perfect time to start building towards next T20 World Cup
The first task is to climb into the top three in the ICC rankings, Asalanka said ahead of the series against New Zealand. In T20Is, which the teams play first, Sri Lanka are at No. 8. In ODIs, they are curiously a little better, despite not having earned qualification to next year’s Champions Trophy, and sit at No. 6. They need to make progress on both fronts, said Asalanka, who has been captain of both formats since August this year.”We need to climb up the rankings, because that shows we’ve been consistently winning,” he said. “Our goal is is to climb to the top three in the rankings. If we’ve consistently been winning, when we go to the ICC tournaments, we won’t get exposed.”We’d have played good teams and won, like we used to do in 2014 and before, when we used to get to the semi-finals easily. We are hoping to come back to that level. It’s important to play really well from tour to tour.”While Sri Lanka are in this phase of rediscovering consistency, there is no room to field any worse than a top XI, he said. So far, Sri Lanka’s white-ball resurgence has come only at home, on largely big-turning pitches. But they have through the course of the last few months also fielded new players, who have performed almost immediately – Janith Liyanage, and Nishan Madushka especially.”We only reently started winning a few matches in a row,” Asalanka said. “It’s the same team that played. Until the base of our cricket improves a little more, we’re trying to play the best XI. But we do have a big plus point, which is that the players on the bench also have had a chance, and they’ve performed well before they’ve gone back to the bench.”We’re hoping to play our best XI all the time. That’s how our bench strength improves as well, because they then know how well you have to play to get a spot in that XI. And the players in the XI also fight for their own places. I think we’ve improved that situation recently. Hopefully we can develope 15/16 really strong players over the course of a year.”
Glasgow Rangers appear to have hit the jackpot with the signing of Djeidi Gassama this summer, as the French forward has hit the ground running at Ibrox.
The 21-year-old winger arrived from Sheffield Wednesday on a permanent deal for £2.2m, and has already scored four goals in six appearances in all competitions, as per Sofascore.
Gassama, a right-footed left winger, has already made a habit of getting supporters off their feet with exciting dribbles and clinical finishes in front of goal, after coming over from the Championship.
Russell Martin will now be hoping that the former Paris Saint-Germain youngster can continue to impress week-in-week-out for the rest of the campaign.
Rangers in talks to sign Championship forward
The Light Blues may now be on course to repeat their Gassama masterclass with a swoop for another exciting young attacker from the second tier of English football.
Transfer Focus
Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.
According to HullLive, Rangers have submitted a bid to sign Hull City winger Abu Kamara to bolster their options at the top end of the pitch this summer.
The report claims that the Gers are now in talks with the Tigers over a potential deal to bring the England U20 international to Ibrox, with a fee of £3.5m said to be the asking price.
However, HullLive adds that LaLiga outfit Getafe and Birmingham City have also made offers for the left-footed attacker, and that Getafe appear to be leading the race at this moment in time.
The outlet also states that there is a growing feeling that the deal will be done soon, and that the forward has played his last match for the club.
Why Abu Kamara would be an exciting signing for Rangers
The 21-year-old talent would be an exciting signing for Rangers to make if they can beat Getafe and Birmingham to his signature because he has the potential to provide a threat as both a scorer and a creator of goals.
Kamara is a left-footed right winger, providing a different option to right-footed right winger Oliver Antman, and his performances in the Championship last term suggest that he could be a Gassama repeat at Ibrox.
Former teammate Conor Shaughnessy once described the England youth international as a “dangerous” right-sided forward, and his statistics back up that claim.

As you can see in the table above, Kamara and Gassama performed at a similar rate against their expected tallies, whilst the Hull star offered more creativity for his side in the final third.
These statistics suggest that Rangers could expect a similar impact from the former Norwich man at the top end of the pitch, which is an exciting prospect when you consider what the Frenchman has already achieved in Scotland.
Kamara’s form for Portsmouth on loan in the 2023/24 campaign also shows the kind of potential he has for the future, as the English wing wizard delivered an eye-catching return of ten goals and 11 assists in all competitions.
For a fee of £3.5m, which is not significantly more than the £2.2m that the club paid for Gassama, the Hull youngster could be a shrewd and exciting addition to Martin’s squad to bolster his options in the wide areas.
Better signing than Mendy: Rangers line up move to bring £8m star to Ibrox
Rangers are reportedly interested in a deal for a star who would be an even better signing than Nobel Mendy.

However, it is now down to the club to convince the player that a move to Ibrox is the best next step for him, and to persuade him to turn down Getafe and Birmingham in the process.

Bjorn Fortuin named as replacement, with Maharaj to be assessed ahead of first Test starting December 26

Keshav Maharaj’s five-for recently took South Africa to a final-day win against Sri Lanka•Associated Press
South Africa left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj has been ruled out of the remainder of the ongoing ODI series against Pakistan. According to a media release, “scans revealed a left adductor strain”, with Maharaj having suffered the injury during warm-ups ahead of the first ODI on Tuesday.South Africa have named Bjorn Fortuin as a like-for-like replacement for Maharaj for the second and third ODIs against Pakistan.Maharaj had limped off just before the toss for the first game, and was last moment replaced by pace-bowling allrounder Andile Phehlukwayo in South Africa’s XI. The release further stated that Maharaj will be returning home to Durban “for rehabilitation and will be reassessed ahead of the first Test against Pakistan”.Maharaj’s injury adds to an already lengthy list of missing bowlers for South Africa. The hosts are already without Anrich Nortje (fractured toe), Gerald Coetzee (groin), Lungi Ngidi (hip), Nandre Burger (lower back), and Wiaan Mulder (broken finger). Moreover, Maharaj recently bowled South Africa to a final-day win against Sri Lanka in the second Test in Gqeberha, bagging 5 for 76 to trigger a batting collapse. In Maharaj’s absence, South Africa have spin-bowling options in Dane Piedt and Senuran Muthusamy to choose from for the Test series against Pakistan. Those with an outside chance of making it to the side include batting allrounder Neil Brand, who bowls left-arm spin, and had toured New Zealand earlier this year; legspinner Shaun von Berg, who also made his debut on the same tour; and left-arm spinner Tabraiz Shamsi, although he had last played first-class cricket in 2021.The first Test of the two-match series against Pakistan begins in Centurion on December 26. South Africa are one win away from making it to the final of the World Test Championship, where they are currently placed at No. 1 in the points table.

Both Australia and England are still finalising their bowling attacks with the MCG pitch having a tinge of green on it

Sthalekar: Will break Healy’s heart not to play the Ashes Test
Australia captain Alyssa Healy has declared herself “good to go” for Thursday’s historic women’s Ashes Test at the MCG but conceded the final decision on whether she plays will not be up to her with the team to be announced at the toss.Meanwhile, England captain Heather Knight confirmed Sophia Dunkley will come back into the Test side after missing the last game in South Africa as a seventh batter but Kate Cross has been ruled out despite training yesterday, with a decision to be made by England whether to play two spinners or three specialist seamers in the attack.Healy attending the captain’s press conference in her full whites and her baggy green the day before the Test on Wednesday appeared a clear indication that her recovery from a foot injury has gone well, and that she was preparing to play the game after getting through a solid training session on Tuesday. She also posed for photos with Knight and went and looked at the pitch prior to training. But despite declaring herself ready to play, she could not confirm whether she was locked into the XI as the selectors are set to make the final decision on Wednesday evening.”I’m good to go,” Healy said with a smile. “The final XI hasn’t quite been decided upon just yet, but I’m standing here in front of you without a moon boot, saying I’m ready to go.”Alyssa Healy has a look at the Test pitch at the MCG•Getty Images
Healy confirmed that the decision would be a joint one between the selectors and the medical staff as to her availability.Related

“I think a bit of both,” Healy said. “I think the medical staff have been really supportive of not necessarily what I’ve wanted to do, but just the opportunity to potentially even push to play in this Test match in particular. They’ve been awesome. We’ve done everything we possibly can to get myself in a position to put my hand up and say, I’m ready to go. There’s a little bit taken out of my hands in that regard and obviously we still want to do the best by the team. But I’m excited and I feel like, body wise, I’m ready to get out there and lead the side in a Test match which is cool.”Healy said she had pulled up well after running, fielding and batting at training on Tuesday and also confirmed she would not need much pain management throughout the game. She also said there were very few fears of her doing any more damage to the stress injury in her foot.”It’s been surprising to me every single day that I’ve done some stuff, just how well it’s responded,” Healy said. “I was pushed pretty hard yesterday. I think you all saw me. I was blowing a fair bit.”Obviously we’ve done that on purpose to try and see what I can and can’t get through and I’ve pulled up really well. So I’m really positive moving forward.Alyssa Healy and Heather Knight pose ahead of the day-night Ashes Test at the MCG•Getty Images
“There’s a bit of unknown as to how the four days will pan out. But I think at the moment I’m on as little medication as possible, which I think is a huge sign. The fact that I can get through what I can without any, always means you can add more, right? But we’ve sought a lot of advice, a lot of specialist advice as to what it might look like moving forward, and there’s no real evidence to suggest that it might go any further than what it currently is. So that’s positive signs for me, and probably gave me the mental nod as well to go, yep, I think I can push to try and play. So I’m confident getting through four days, and hopefully it can do just that.”Healy not being able to keep does change the composition of the top order. Beth Mooney will take the gloves but will not open as a result. Mooney has opened in five of her seven Test matches, including the last three Australia have played. Australia’s top seven has been unchanged in those three matches with Mooney opening alongside Phoebe Litchfield while Healy has batted at No. 5. Healy said she was happy to bat anywhere but no decision has been made. Georgia Voll is the only other option to make her Test debut if Healy is ruled out by the selectors.”Moons coming down the order is a bit of a shift, and we’re going to have to make a decision at the top,” Healy said. “I’m more than happy to bat anywhere for Australia. I think everybody knows that. So whether it’s me, great, if it’s not me, then obviously there’s a pretty obvious candidate.”Healy took a look at the MCG surface which had a typical covering of green grass on it. Whether it will play the same as it does for the men in Tests and Sheffield Shield cricket remains to be seen. Australia are wrestling with the fact that it is typically a seamer friendly track but their spinners have been the dominant force in this Ashes so far, and in the previous Ashes Test win in 2023.Sophia Dunkley will be adding batting depth to England•ECB via Getty Images
England are facing a similar debate having played six batters, three quicks and two spinners in their last Test win in South Africa. Knight confirmed that Dunkley will come in which means a bowler will miss out.”We’ve got 12 at the moment, we’re just deciding on the final bowler,” Knight said. “Obviously, in the last Test match we went for an extra bowler because of the proximity to the Ashes. But in this Test match, we’re going to play the extra batter, so Sophia Dunkley will come in from that Test match. And then we’re just deciding between a seamer or a spinner for that final spot. We’ll have another look at the wicket tonight.”There’s no room for Cross however. Despite getting through two spells at training yesterday, she is not quite fit enough to play in the Test match.”Kate Cross is unfortunately not going to be playing,” Knight said. “She’s been amazing. She’s worked so diligently to try and get over her [back] injury. Worked really hard, but she hasn’t quite been able to get back to her pace and her performance level. Really gutted for her, because she’s a key member for us, and it’s been really great to have her back around the group actually the last couple of days, she’s a huge member of the team and a leader in this group.”
