BPL: Batter given timed out before Mehidy calls him back

Tom O’Connell walked out later after the allocated three minutes were up and was given out as a result

Mohammad Isam01-Jan-2025Chittagong Kings captain Mohammad Mithun praised his opposite number Mehidy Hasan Miraz after the latter called back Tom O’Connell, who had been dismissed timed out during their BPL match against Khulna Tigers in Dhaka on Tuesday.O’Connell, the Australian legspinner, walked out to bat after the allocated three minutes were up during Chittagong’s chase of 204. Mehidy, the fielding captain, went to the umpire along with several of his team-mates to ask about the delay. The umpires, Raveendra Wimalasiri and Tanvir Ahmed, adjudged O’Connell to be out. As O’Connell started to trudge back to the dugout, Mehidy called him back.Related

Mithun accepted that the dismissal was legitimate, and said that O’Connell had been taken by surprise as the wickets fell quickly, and he didn’t have enough time to get ready despite batting at No. 7.”I personally feel Miraz did a fantastic job,” Mithun said. “He showed that he has a big heart. It is within the rules for the fielding side to appeal. Credit to Miraz for letting [O’Connell] return to the crease.”The batter shouldn’t be late to the crease, particularly in a T20. He was a little late in getting ready. Probably he was a little relaxed when he was getting ready, maybe he didn’t realise that we would lose wickets so quickly. That’s what made him late. Nothing else.”O’Connell’s turn to bat came when Pakistani batter Haider Ali fell for a second-ball duck. Chittagong were 56 for 5 in the seventh over at that stage. After the timed-out drama, however, O’Connell himself fell for a golden duck, caught at short midwicket where Mehidy took the simple catch off Mohammad Nawaz’s bowling.Khulna went on to beat Chittagong by 37 runs.

'He wants to be there' – Enzo Maresca delivers latest injury update on Cole Palmer and addresses growing Chelsea fans' concerns over surgery

Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca has spoken to the media about Cole Palmer's condition at a press conference on Monday morning. It comes after the Blues star lasted just 21 minutes in the weekend defeat to Manchester United, which was his first start since a groin injury hampered his start to the 2025-26 season.

'We need to assess a little bit'

After being forced off the pitch at Old Trafford less than midway through the first half, Maresca has confirmed that Palmer remains a doubt for upcoming Chelsea fixtures and still requires further medical assessment. But the Blues coach also admitted that his star man wasn't 100 per cent for the Manchester United game, which he started, calling it now a "day by day" situation.

AdvertisementPalmer surgery not currently a concern

"Cole probably is the only one that we need to assess a little bit," Maresca explained as he gave team news to assembled reporters before Tuesday night's Carabao Cup tie against Lincoln City. "He already did a huge effort last Saturday [against Man Utd]. He was not 100 per cent. He wants to be there to help the team. It's day by day to see how he is. The rest [of the squad] are okay.

"The medical staff didn't mention to me about surgery. I don't know about the next weeks, but I don't think so to be honest."

Getty Images SportChelsea's lack of 'number 10' depth

For all of the attacking talent in Chelsea's squad, the Blues appear to lack a natural replacement for Palmer in the central attacking midfield role. In his absence for wins over West Ham and Fulham, Joao Pedro got the nod to start, but Liam Delap's subsequent injury has pushed the Brazilian higher up the pitch. Facundo Buonanotte then started the Brentford draw, while it was Andrey Santos who came on for Palmer at Old Trafford.

AFPChelsea's tough fixture list to navigate

Chelsea are in action four times before club football pauses for the October international break early next month. But after being heavy favourites against Lincoln in the Carabao Cup and then hosting a struggling Brighton in the Premier League, the Blues welcome Jose Mourinho back to Stamford Bridge in his new role with Benfica, before Liverpool also then visit. Depending on how Palmer recovers and how his fitness is managed, he could return to play some part in those games, or equally miss all of them.

Elanga will love him: £50m Wissa alternative is now a top Newcastle target

Newcastle United remain without Alexander Isak, with the Sweden international still refusing to play for the club this season. It meant Eddie Howe had to get creative in their Premier League opener, with Anthony Gordon leading the line and Harvey Barnes and Anthony Elanga operating out wide.

For Isak’s Sweden teammate Elanga, it was an impressive debut. According to the stats on Sofascore, he made 23 sprints and showed his electric pace, clocking in at 35.3km/h as his quickest speed. He also created two chances and was a bright spark going forward for Newcastle.

However, their attack feels unbalanced with Gordon up front. They are still targeting a striker this summer, with Isak’s future still very much hanging in the balance.

Newcastle’s striker target

There have certainly been plenty of names bandied about when it comes to Newcastle’s search for a striker. One of the latest targets is Wolves’ Jorgen Strand Larsen, with fellow Premier League centre-forwards Yoane Wissa of Brentford and Nicolas Jackson of Chelsea also viable options.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

However, another name from within the Premier League has once again cropped up. According to a report from TBR Football, the Magpies are said to have made Aston Villa and England star Ollie Watkins a ‘prime target’ ahead of the final ten days of the window.

The former Brentford attacker could leave Villa Park if they themselves can sign Jackson from Chelsea. Given Waktins is ‘one of the names high on their list’, Newcastle could pounce.

As for the price, it was reported earlier in the window that the Villans would demand as much as £50m for the 29-year-old.

Why Watkins would be a good signing

There is no doubt that, if Watkins makes the move to Tyneside this summer, his potential new club would be signing a ready-made Premier League striker. He has garnered a reputation as one of the Premier League’s biggest threats in front of goal.

Watkins has become an incredibly potent Premier League striker. Sky Sports’ Dougie Critchley described the England star as a “dangerous” number nine, and it is easy to see why. He has 75 goals in 185 games in the English top flight, assisting a further 36.

Consistency has been key for the Exeter-born attacker. In the five full seasons of Premier League football he has played, Watkins has reached double figures for goals in all of them. The 2023/24 season was his best, a campaign in which he scored 16 top-flight goals.

Well, Watkins might be a player that Elanga loves playing with. Newcastle’s new recruit, who signed from Nottingham Forest, had an impressive season in Garibaldi Red in 2024/25, scoring six goals and assisting 11 in 38 Premier League appearances.

Newcastle’s number 20 had a big role to play in their 0-0 draw against Watkins’ Villa last weekend.

His line-breaking pass on the counterattack to Gordon led Villans defender Ezri Konsa to haul down the makeshift striker, with the result a red card for the centre-back.

The winger loves to play with space ahead of him, as he said in an interview last season. He explained after a stunning solo effort against Manchester United that “attacking the space” is a key part of his game.

The fact that he can exploit that so well must be music to Watkins’ ears. The England striker has previously said himself that “running in behind and causing the defence trouble” is his “bread and butter”, as this goal against Everton last season showed.

It is easy to see why Elanga and Watkins could work so well together. Elanga is a player who loves to carry the ball and find runners in behind, and with Watkins’ ability to stretch play, this could play into his hands perfectly.

For a fee of £50m, pairing up a deadly Premier League striker and a proven assist-maker could be the perfect move for Howe.

Yuzvendra Chahal returns to Northamptonshire for 2025 season

Chahal will be available from June until the end of the season after an impressive stint at Wantage Road in 2024

ESPNcricinfo staff13-Mar-2025Yuzvendra Chahal will return to Northamptonshire this summer on a contract running from June until the end of the 2025 season. The Indian leg spinner will be available for the county’s County Championship and One-Day Cup campaigns. The deal is reminiscent to the one that brought the 34-year old to Wantage Road last summer.Chahal ended up taking 5 for 14 on his List A debut for the club, against Kent, who he joined in 2023, before helping Northamptonshire to a fourth-place finish in Division Two with 19 Championship wickets in four matches, at an average of 21.10. He also managed two five-wicket hauls, with 5 for 45 against Derbyshire making up career-best first-class match figures of 9 for 99.Though Chahal has not featured for India since 2023 – he was an unused member of the successful 2024 T20 World Cup squad – he remains a sought-after wrist spinner. In November, he became the most expensive spin bowler at IPL auctions when he was signed for INR 18 crore (£1.6 million) by Punjab Kings ahead of the 2025 season, which finishes on May 25.”I thoroughly enjoyed my time here last season so I’m very happy to be coming back.” Chahal said.”There are some great people in that dressing room, and I can’t wait to be part of that again.”We played some great cricket towards the back end of the season so hopefully we’re able to replicate that and big up some victories.”Northamptonshire’s recently-appointed head coach Darren Lehmann lauded the the re-signing of Chahal: “I’m really excited that one of best leg spinners in the world is returning to Northamptonshire this season.””He brings invaluable experience and he’s an absolute gentleman who loves the game. Having him available from mid-June until the end of the season will be fantastic for us.”

Xhaka 2.0: Sunderland strike late agreement with “monumental” £20m star

Sunderland have been flexing their muscles all across the summer transfer window with some impressive purchases after promotion to the Premier League.

12 new faces have arrived at Regis Le Bris’ camp already to try and make immediate safety a reality, with plenty more signings expected to join the Stadium of Light ranks on a chaotic deadline day before the clock strikes 7pm.

The ambitious Black Cats are already edging ever closer to picking up their first standout buy of the day, as Le Bris dives back into the Bundesliga market to try and win himself a similar warrior figure to new captain Granit Xhaka.

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

Now, as it’s been reported by The Athletic’s David Ornstein, Sunderland have struck up a last-ditch agreement with RB Leipzig defender Letsharel Geertruida.

Fabrizio Romano has further followed up on the breaking news to clarify that a £20m buy option clause has been inserted into the initial loan deal, should the Black Cats want to make the signing a permanent one, with the deal close to being finalised.

RB Leipzig's LutsharelGeertruidain action

The former Feyenoord defender could well go down as a superb late buy for the Premier League newcomers, as Le Bris and Co. pray that their next Xhaka has entered through the door to make survival an easier task to complete.

Why Geertruida can be Xhaka 2.0

While he is now being told he can leave Leipzig behind, Geertruida has shone in flashes in the demanding German top-flight, away from being remembered fondly in his native Netherlands.

A sturdy six clean sheets would come the 25-year-old’s way last season in the hustle and bustle of league action when competing with Xhaka’s Bayer Leverkusen, with a goal also heading his direction, away from just completing his defensive basics.

RB Leipzig's Lutsharel Geetruida in action against Eintracht Frankfurt.

Xhaka is also well known for being both gritty and a creative force, too, with nine goal contributions next to his name last season for his own Bundesliga employers, on top of averaging 3.9 duels won per league contest, as per Sofascore.

The duo together could really offer Sunderland some steel and creativity; therefore, with Geertruida even being dubbed “monumental” for his forceful nature by scout Antonio Mango when consistently standing out in the Eredivisie.

Feyenoord's Lutsharel Geertruida

Indeed, the Rotterdam-born defender would pick up a stunning 24 goals and 11 assists from a whopping 202 clashes for ex-side Feyenoord. To add context, Xhaka – when routinely strutting his stuff in the Premier League from the middle of the park – has his own impressive tally of 17 goals and 25 assists from 228 games, with an assist already notched up for Le Bris and Co.

Yet, his determination to always fight for the cause never wavered across that mammoth collection of matches, with his final full Eredivisie campaign seeing him collect a colossal 15 clean sheets.

Geertruida might even be lining up alongside Xhaka in the midfield areas shortly, when assessing the table above, with the Dutchman capable of playing in a whole host of different positions if needed, which makes him even more of an invaluable late buy.

Having starred briefly in the Bundesliga, and more consistently in the Dutch top division, it will be intriguing to see how the 25-year-old now fares in the bright lights of the Premier League.

If he is a rip-roaring success, it could well prove to be another coup from Germany, much like the fanfare that greeted Xhaka’s arrival from the BayArena.

Chelsea women's player ratings vs West Ham: Aggie Beever-Jones can't stop scoring! England striker nets again as USWNT star Alyssa Thompson impresses on first WSL start

No Chelsea player had ever scored in the Blues' first four games of a Women's Super League campaign – until Aggie Beever-Jones did exactly that on Sunday to set the defending champions on their way to a dominant 4-0 win that was certainly eventful. With records broken, plenty of goals scored and a stunning red card for Ines Belloumou, for pulling the hair of United States star Alyssa Thompson, those in attendance certainly got their money's worth when it came to action – though it was the kind which only the away end could really enjoy.

It all started with just eight minutes on the clock, as Beever-Jones fired a quite brilliant free-kick into the top corner. Despite Chelsea being crowned WSL champions in each of the past six seasons, no one has ever started a campaign for the Blues in a manner as impressively consistent as the England star, as was confirmed with her record-breaking fourth in four in east London.

That set the tone for Chelsea, who were 2-0 up four minutes later when Johanna Rytting Kaneryd capitalised on some statuesque defending to tap in her first of the new season, and 3-0 up three minutes after that thanks to a powerful strike from Erin Cuthbert. Any hopes West Ham harboured of getting back into the game were then dashed by Belloumou's needless sending off, which came as the clock was just ticking past the halfway point of the first period.

Chelsea's relentlessness did desert them after that, giving the Hammers some welcome respite. However, that was only until the hour, when Sonia Bompastor turned to her bench for more ammunition. All of Catarina Macario, Sandy Baltimore, Guro Reiten, Sam Kerr and Maika Hamano would be introduced, and all of them helped pepper the home goal with crosses and shots. Were it not for the woodwork and some top saves from Kinga Szemik, the scoreline could've been much worse, though Wieke Kaptein was able to squeeze in just one more, thanks to a terrific cross from the lively Macario.

Hannah Hampton (7/10):

Had very little to do all game and yet, still came up with a fantastic save one-on-one in the latter stages.

Nathalie Bjorn (6/10):

Good on the ball, though struggled to win many duels.

Millie Bright (8/10):

Was in the right place at the right time on several occasions, able to step in and snuff out most West Ham attacks. Offered plenty with the ball at her feet, too, be it with line-breaking drives or sweeping long passes.

Veerle Buurman (7/10):

Another really promising performance from the talented teenager in which she came out on top so often in her individual battles.

Johanna Rytting Kaneryd (7/10):

Showed good goal-scoring instincts to be in the right place to tap in Chelsea's second. Was quiet after that, until finding something of a second wind just past the hour and turning into an electric threat again.

Keira Walsh (7/10):

Almost perfect in possession, misplacing just one pass all afternoon. Recycled the ball well and provided astute defensive cover.

Oriane Jean-Francois (6/10):

Had some good moments in possession in a packed midfield but was a little sloppy at times, too.

Erin Cuthbert (8/10):

Ran the show in midfield with her accuracy in possession and great running, both on and off the ball. Was always willing to take advantage of the space afforded to her and get a shot off, an approach which gave her a great goal.

Alyssa Thompson (7/10):

A promising full debut, despite her playing in the unnatural role of a left wing-back. Showed lots of positivity going forward and did her defensive duties well.

Wieke Kaptein (7/10):

Was a positive and energetic presence throughout and got a goal her effort deserved.

Aggie Beever-Jones (7/10):

Led the line well, with plenty of energy, and scored a terrific goal to break the deadlock.

Sandy Baltimore (6/10):

Gave Thompson some respite by slotting into the left wing-back role she's much more familiar with. Got up and down the flank well and fizzed in a couple of dangerous balls that only needed a touch to be turned into a goal.

Guro Reiten (6/10):

Another impactful sub who was so close to getting a goal not long after being introduced.

Catarina Macario (7/10):

Incredibly positive and direct from the second she entered the game, getting a well-deserved assist only a few minutes later. Could've had two goals, too, were it not for a top save and, later, the woodwork.

Sam Kerr (N/A):

Continued her return from a long injury lay-off with some more minutes in the tank in the closing stages.

Maika Hamano (N/A):

Another sub who helped keep the energy up and the pressure on.

Sonia Bompastor (7/10):

Set-up her team in an orthodox formation which packed the midfield and that helped Chelsea to completely overwhelm West Ham, especially in the early stages. Subs changed the game when things became stale, putting the Blues back on the front foot immediately.

'Ruthless' Bayern Munich sacking was 'worse' than Real Madrid or Chelsea dismissals as Carlo Ancelotti reveals 'mistake' against PSG that cost him his job

Carlo Ancelotti has revealed that his dismissal by Bayern Munich was "worse" than the sackings he faced at Chelsea and Real Madrid. The Italian coach says it was a mistake against Paris Saint-Germain that saw him given his walking papers just a month into the 2017-18 season. The legendary manager reflected on the disappointing period in an upcoming autobiography.

Not Madrid or Chelsea: Bayern sacking the most ruthless for Ancelotti

Ancelotti is one of the most celebrated and decorated coaches in football history, with a CV that speaks for itself. He achieved success at almost every club he managed, but that was not enough to prevent him from facing the sack. He was dismissed by Chelsea in 2011, just a year after he helped the Blues win the league and cup double. In 2015, Real Madrid let go of him after he guided them to their 10th Champions League title. However, it was his sacking by Bayern in 2017 which Ancelotti has described as the most "ruthless." It was the first time he was sacked mid-season in a career which had completed 22 years at the time.

AdvertisementAFPAncelotti explains why Bayern sacked him

published excerpts from Ancelotti's upcoming book, in which the legendary head coach was critical of Bayern while revealing the reasons that led to his dismissal.

"Once, the bosses asked me to instill more discipline among the players and gave me a list of five points to read out to them," he said. "However, I felt that we were dealing with a top-class professional team, not a youth team, so the players should be treated accordingly. So I stood in front of the team in the locker room, pulled the piece of paper out of my pocket, and said, 'I have orders from the board to read this list to you.' That was my way of distancing myself from this task.

"Then, at the end of September, we went to another of my former clubs. Against Paris Saint-Germain, I decided to forgo our aging wingers and let our defenders push further forward, while we focused primarily on attacks through the middle. It was a mistake. The balance was off, and they were able to disrupt us with their counterattacks. They scored their first goal in the second minute. The final score of 3-0 was Bayern's heaviest defeat in the competition in 21 years.

"The day after the game, the club's board met and concluded that I was the problem. 'Our team's performance since the start of the season hasn't lived up to the expectations we had of them,' [Karl-Heinz] Rummenigge said. The game in Paris clearly showed that we had to take action.

"I've been fired four times by major clubs: Juventus, Chelsea, Real Madrid, and Bayern Munich. This goes to show that it doesn't take an erratic president or unpredictable owner to get you fired. Shareholders of a company can do that, too.

"It was the most ruthless dismissal of my entire career. After my departure, they reached the Champions League semifinals and were eliminated by — guess what! — Real Madrid."

A look at Ancelotti's coaching career

After an illustrious career as a midfielder, Ancelotti took his first steps in football management at Reggiana in 1995, before coaching Parma and Juventus. Since leaving Juve, he has coached AC Milan, Chelsea, PSG, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Napoli and Everton, before returning to Madrid for a second spell in 2021. In all, Ancelotti has won 31 titles at club level. He holds the record of winning five Champions League as a manager, doing so twice with Milan and thrice with Madrid. At the end of last season, he left Madrid after being in-charge for four seasons and joined the Brazil national team.

The 66-year-old was appointed as Brazil head coach on a deal that will expire after the 2026 World Cup. The ex-Milan, Chelsea and Madrid boss recently hinted that he wouldn't mind extending his stay as the Selecao's manager. DPL week 1: Naim's 176 helps Prime Bank breach the 400 mark

Prime Bank became the first team in Bangladesh to score 400 in the List A format

Mohammad Isam10-Mar-2025Key takeawaysThere is already evidence that the 46th edition of the Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League will be the most open competition of the last 15 years. The top seven teams – all on four points each – have already dropped points in the first round that began on March 3. There have been two other 300-plus totals in the first three rounds, but there have been also been two sides getting bowled out for under 100 runs.Coming hot on the heels of Bangladesh’s disappointing Champions Trophy campaign, the spotlight will be on if the Dhaka Premier League, known as the country’s most important domestic competition, can provide some new performers.Best battersMohammad Naim continues to be the standout batter of the season in domestic cricket. He struck a career-best 176 against Brothers Union in the game in which Prime Bank racked up 422 for 8 in 50 overs. His 3 for 15 (against Shinepukur Cricket Club) and 3 for 23 (against Gazi Group Cricketers) were impressive spells. Batting first, Rupganj were bowled out for 216 in 48.4 overs. Prime Bank, however, slipped to 23 for 4 in the third over. What Xavi has said about Ibrox as Rangers chiefs weigh up Martin's future

Rangers have had a torrid start to life under Russell Martin as they are winless in the Scottish Premiership, and their dreams of Champions League qualification were ruthlessly put to the sword by Club Brugge in a 9-1 defeat on aggregate.

Rangers have only recorded wins in the League Cup and in their failed Champions League qualification campaign during Martin’s tenure, ramping up the pressure on a managerial selection many fans disdained from day one.

It’s not just early days for Martin, it’s also early days for Rangers’ new owners, Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises. And with the frustration mounting around Ibrox, The I Paper’s chief football correspondent, Daniel Storey, has highlighted how the new men in charge face something of a time bomb as tensions continue to bubble:

Three out of work managers Rangers could sign

There are options available should Rangers decide to make a change after witnessing the fan sentiment first hand on Sunday. They wouldn’t be the first club to take drastic measures, as the likes of José Mourinho, Ole Gunnar Solskjær, and Erik ten Hag have all been sacked in the opening month of the season

Mourinho could actually be a contender to replace Martin if the owners did decide to act. He has previously expressed that he doesn’t want his next club to be in the Champions League, which Martin has seen too, and has also spoken positively about the Gers in the past: “Why not in the future? People can say the Scottish league is a league of two teams, but it is a league of passion. Passion in football is everything.”

Another candidate is the former Borussia Dortmund manager Edin Terzić. The German manager had previously been linked with the club when they sacked Philippe Clement, and is still available as a free agent.

Possibly the most exciting manager available however is legendary Spanish World Cup winning midfielder Xavi, who has been out of work since leaving Barcelona last year.

Back in 2022, when he was still in charge in Catalonia, he saw Rangers as one of their biggest threats in the Europa League, heaping praise on the atmosphere at Ibrox: “People will say Barcelona are favourites because of history, and they are used to seeing us play in the Champions League – but this is not the Champions League… As somebody who has played in Glasgow, nobody is going to get an easy time against Rangers.”

Rangers face stick or twist decision

While there’s currently no shortage of available managers and talented tacticians like Xavi and Mourinho are tempting, it would be an awfully big gamble to get rid of Martin at such an early stage.

Martin’s tenure at Southampton was often criticised because his playing style didn’t suit the Premier League. He favoured high possession football, which worked well in the Championship, but not so much when the Saints were promoted and his squad struggled against the tougher opposition.

Given the gap in quality between the squads of the big two and the rest in Scotland, the 39 year-old should be able instil that Championship dominance once again, but the difficulty for Rangers’ new owners will be balancing their patience with the fans’ justified desire for change.

ECB Reporters Network supported by Rothesay06-Apr-2025Derbyshire 391 (Madsen 118, Came 83, Jewell 61) and 93 for 1 (Jewell 51*) beat Gloucestershire 222 (van Buuren 67, Reece 6-52, Dal 4-43) and 259 (Charlesworth 110, Reece 4-45) by nine wicketsLuis Reece celebrated a personal milestone to set up a Derbyshire victory over Gloucestershire by nine wickets on day three of the Rothesay County Championship Division Two match at Derby. The allrounder took 10 wickets in a match for the first time, finishing with 4 for 45 to add to his 6 for 52 in the first innings.Ben Charlesworth made 110, his third first-class century, but no one else could play a significant innings as Gloucestershire were bowled out for 259.That left the home side a victory target of 91 and Caleb Jewell’s unbeaten 51 , his second half-century of the game, guided them home inside 20 overs to give Derbyshire a 22-point haul and a victory from the opening match of the season for the first time in six years.Gloucestershire needed a big partnership from Charlesworth and James Bracey to have any realistic chance but they added only 10 more runs before Zak Chappell broke through.Chappell found some late inswing in the seventh over of the morning to beat Bracey’s defensive push and give Derbyshire just the start they wanted.Gloucestershire’s hopes of setting Derbyshire any kind of challenging target rested with Charlesworth and Graeme van Buuren, who was the only batter to pass 50 in the first innings. He started positively, driving Chappell down the ground for four and cutting Anuj Dal for two more boundaries but Derbyshire soon took another step closer to victory.Martin Andersson tempted van Buuren into an expansive drive which he edged into the hands of Wayne Madsen at second slip.Gloucestershire were only seven ahead and now it was a question of how long they could delay the inevitable.Charlesworth completed a fine hundred which came off 171 balls when he turned Jack Morley behind square for a couple but the opener’s timing seemed to desert him before he became the next wicket to fall.He miscued advancing down the pitch to Morley and only just cleared mid off but when he tried to pull Reece he picked out Pat Brown at midwicket.Tom Price and Zaman Akhter prevented further setbacks before lunch but the stand was broken six overs into the afternoon session when Akhtar was lbw playing back to the spin of David Lloyd.Lloyd then had Price lbw for 26 leaving Reece to run in from the City End and polish off the tail with the second new ball.Matt Taylor edged to second slip as he pushed forward and in his next over Reece beat Ajeet Singh Dale’s swing across the line to leave Derbyshire with a modest victory target. They lost Lloyd in the fourth over to Tom Price but the main concern for Gloucestershire was improving their over rate to avoid a points deduction.Spinners Ollie Price and van Buuren operated in tandem which allowed Jewell and Harry Came to ease to the finishing line in the late afternoon sunshine. The only note of concern for Derbyshire was a worrying injury to substitute fielder Aneurin Donald who appeared to damage his shoulder diving to try and save a boundary.
