Nixon issues Derby takeover update

The takeover of Derby County is not currently a priority for Wayne Rooney’s side.

What’s the latest?

That’s according to The Sun journalist Alan Nixon, who, in a post on Twitter, claimed that Erik Alonso’s proposed takeover of Derby is not currently a priority for the club, as the Rams face a relegation showdown on the final day of the season.

In response to a fan requesting an update on the takeover, as well as Derby’s plans for recruitment in the summer, Nixon said: “Both are not priorities right now.”

No news is good news

Indeed, the proposed purchase of Derby County by Alonso’s No Limits Sports Limited company, which is currently awaiting the English Football League’s Owners and Directors Test approval, is not likely to be the first thought of many Derby fans at present, as the club faces the most important fixture of their season on Saturday.

Having failed to secure a point over their last six league fixtures, Wayne Rooney’s side must now ensure that they beat Sheffield Wednesday this weekend to avoid being relegated to the third tier of English football.

If they only manage a draw with the Owls, then the club must hope that Rotherham United do not defeat Cardiff City, while a loss to Wednesday would result in relegation regardless of how that other game pans out.

Nixon’s update on the Rams’ potential takeover could actually be viewed as good news for fans of the club, as the announcement of, or news regarding, the takeover prior to the weekend’s game could prove to be something of a distraction for Wayne Rooney and his players, so no news is good news in this regard too.

Plus, Alonso himself already appears to be fully invested in the club, as the Spaniard recently took to Twitter, stating, “Just one more victory!” along with a waving hand emoji and the hashtag “DCFC” – something which would seem to indicate that the businessman has his heart set on the purchase of the club.

And, if the club do go on to secure their Championship survival this Saturday, as well as Alonso’s takeover deal receiving approval from the EFL shortly afterwards, things will immediately start to look a lot brighter at Pride Park.

However, it’s great to see that everyone at Pride Park is not worrying about any takeover for now, and instead, all focus is on staying up and that is something that Derby fans will undoubtedly be buzzing about.

Collingwood's rich vein of form continues

Paul Collingwood continued his prolific start to the season by reaching 665 runs in all cricket as Durham recovered from early problems against Warwickshire paceman Vasbert Drakes

John Sheldon09-May-2001Paul Collingwood continued his prolific start to the season by reaching 665 runs in all cricket as Durham recovered from early problems against Warwickshire paceman Vasbert Drakes.Collingwood emerged unscathed from the West Indian’s opening burst of three for 20 in six overs and made an unbeaten 105 in re-directing his injury-weakened county to 250 for seven on a first day shortened by rain and bad light after tea.The 24-year-old all-rounder scored his second century of the campaign – the first was against Durham University – in an impressive follow-up to his Benson & Hedges aggregate of two Gold Awards and 245 runs from five matches. But in the context of Durham’s pre-lunch struggle, this was probably the most valuable performance. Drakes’ lively start was too much for Jon Lewis, fending to gully, Martin Speight, bowled off his pads, and Nicky Peng, edging a lifter behind the wicketDurham quickly subsided to 58 for five with Michael Gough losing his off stump to former team-mate Melvyn Betts and Danny Law giving a second catch to Keith Piper from Alan Richardson’s second ball. But Collingwood found good support from Andrew Pratt and together they put on 108 before Pratt fell to Richardson for a career-best 52 when Dominic Ostler held a slip catch at the second attempt.Collingwood safely reached tea with 19 fours from 171 balls, but the hold-up for rain was the undoing of his next partner, Ian Hunter, after a stand of 84. He was yorked by Alan Richardson for 31 in the third over after a brief re-start.

15 cricketers pick themselves for tour of Zimbabwe

For a change there was no acrimony, no contentious decisions and no fireworks in an Indian selection committee meeting

Anand Vasu17-May-2001For a change there was no acrimony, no contentious decisions and no fireworks in an Indian selection committee meeting. Picking the team for the two-Test series to be played in Zimbabwe was an easy task. As predicted, five seamers, seven batsmen, two spinners and one stumper got the nod. The successful series that concluded recently against the touring Aussies made the job easy for Chandu Borde and company. With Sourav Ganguly and John Wright, the five selectors sat together for an hour at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore on Thursday and completed the formalities."Based on the conditions, we have decided to go in for five seamers," said Borde, justifying the inclusion of Delhi’s Ashish Nehra and Orissa’s Debashish Mohanty in addition to the trio of Javagal Srinath, Ajit Agarkar and Zaheer Khan. With 32 wickets in the series against Australia, Harbhajan Singh more than picked himself. The search for the Punjab offspinner’s partner however ended with a familiar tune, "Keeping in mind the variety aspect, we decided to go in for a leg spinner," said Borde of Sairaj Bahutule’s inclusion. Once again, spare a thought for Sarandeep Singh. After playing just one Test against Zimbabwe, where he picked up six wickets, the young offspinner has been completely overlooked. In the batting department once again, there were no surprises. Rather, there was no room for any surprise. Skipper Sourav Ganguly, his deputy, Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, VVS Laxman and the two openers Shiv Sunder Das and Sadagoppan Ramesh were always certainties. The one remaining spot went to Hemang Badani. The Tamil Nadu southpaw has impressed many with his consistency in one-dayers, and no one will grudge him his place in the squad of fifteen. Some sections of the media have been highlighting the absence of a third opener in the preparatory camp. Once more, the chairman of the selection committee was quizzed on this and his reply was crisp and to the point. "With only two Tests and two warm up matches to be played, we thought it was unnecessary to take any reserve openers," said Borde who went on to add, "I have spoken to the captain about this. If someone is injured, Rahul Dravid will be used as a makeshift opener." That put all speculation to rest.Ganguly’s statement in the press a few days ago, ensured that Sameer Dighe would go to Zimbabwe. "He’s our number one keeper," said Ganguly, and the selectors have borne him out. The secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India Jaywant Lele, also present at the press briefing, announced that the team for the one-day tri series would be picked at Mumbai in the second week of June. In all, the air was refreshingly different at the post meeting briefing. No one player’s selection or omission gave room for serious disappointment. On a cordial note, Borde stepped out of the hall, remarking wryly "sometimes, you people (the media) seem to know the team composition even before us!"The squad: Sourav Ganguly (capt), Rahul Dravid (v-capt), Sadagopan Ramesh, Shiv Sundar Das, Sachin Tendulkar, VVS Laxman, Sameer Dighe, Hemang Badani, Javagal Srinath, Ajit Agarkar, Zaheer Khan, Harbhajan Singh, Sairaj Bahutule, Debashish Mohanty and Ashish Nehra. Coach: John Wright and Manager: Chetan Chauhan.

West Ham eye Abraham and Hlozek

Many West Ham United fans have been left to buzz as a transfer update emerged on Tammy Abraham and Adam Hlozek.

As per The Athletic, both strikers are on the radar of the East London club ahead of the summer window.

David Moyes’ team are in desperate need of more strikers at the London Stadium, given that Michail Antonio seems to be the only senior out-and-out option and is very injury-prone, and Abraham and Hlozek may both be smart buys in their own ways.

The former of course has the experience of playing in the Premier League with Chelsea, and has notched up no fewer than 12 goals and a further six assists in 32 games in total over all competitions so far in the 2020/21 term (Transfermarkt).

Hlozek is a player with more potential at just 18 years of age, and given the success of both Vladimir Coufal and Tomas Soucek, the Czech Republic international is surely worth a punt.

Everton fans on Moise Kean in new PSG kit

Some Everton fans have been left to speculate as Moise Kean modelled the new Paris Saint-Germain home kit for the 2021/22 season.

As shared on the French club’s official Twitter page, the Italy international can be seen wearing the new shirt along with Neymar and Julian Draxler.

Kean is only on loan at PSG and is due to return to Goodison Park at the end of the season.

It is therefore odd to see him modelling the new kit unless he is playing for them and not the Merseyside club next term.

There have been some recent reports of him leaving Carlo Ancelotti’s team on a permanent deal, and some Toffees supporters have duly been wondering whether PSG have reached an agreement to sign him.

Pundit warns Celtic they must spend

Former Premier League midfielder Lee Hendrie has told The Transfer Tavern in an exclusive interview that Celtic must spend more than £15m this summer if they are to reclaim their Scottish Premiership title.

Last summer, as per Transfermarkt, the Glasgow club spent around £14m on signings and loans, bringing in the likes of Albian Ajeti from West Ham and Shane Duffy from Brighton.

It was an unsuccessful season, however, for the two recruits and Celtic’s other additions, with the Bhoys finishing second in the league and a whopping 25 points behind their fierce rivals.

And now Hendrie has warned that significant investment will be needed if it is to be another story next term.

Speaking exclusively to TT about what Celtic have to do this summer, the Sky Sports pundit said:

“I feel that they’re going to have to spend probably a lot more than 10 or £15m to start competing with the likes of Rangers.

“Celtic is in a rebuild structure, for me. It’s been proven this season that Rangers have really blew them out of the water. So your 10 and £15m is not going to cut it I don’t feel.

“They’re going to have to certainly recruit good loan players and certainly going to have to spend way over £15m if they’re going to compete with Rangers.”

It remains to be seen what sort of transfer budget Celtic’s new manager will have to work with. But after the campaign they have had, and with such an influential figure like Scott Brown leaving the club, reinforcements are needed.

Colts cruise to Premier League Trophy triumph

Wolves fans on Guedes transfer update

Many Wolves fans have been left to rave as a transfer update emerged on Goncalo Guedes.

As per Football Insider, the Midlands club are confident of beating Everton to the signing of the Portugal international after early talks.

A recruitment source has told the news outlet that the Molineux faithful have talked about offering Patrick Cutrone in part exchange for him, and are in pole position due to their links with Jorge Mendes.

Guedes scored a decent seven goals and supplied a further seven assists in 34 matches in total across all competitions in the 2020/21 season (Transfermarkt), and at 24 years of age, he still has a lot of potential to fulfil.

If it also means getting one over on their Premier League rivals, the potential deal certainly makes sense for the Wanderers.
